I know most of you, like myself, are ready to jet off to a far-off destination as soon as possible. I have so many places on my bucket list that there’s no way I’ll get to scratch them all off. However, I’ve managed to find some unique places in Texas that let you travel the world without leaving the state, and they are truly amazing—reminding me of some places abroad. So even if you’re not planning on leaving the country soon, I’ve gathered a list of some of the best Texas destinations to visit with international flair!

Instead of Visiting Stonehenge Visit…

Stonehenge II! In fact, Texas has two stone henges, but my favorite is in Ingram where they also have the Easter Island statues!

This free, public art installation pays homage to the original Stonehenge with its circle of concrete megaliths, but with a distinctly Texan twist. What truly sets Stonehenge II apart are the two, thirteen-foot-tall Easter Island head replicas flanking the megalith circle, making it an unforgettable landmark.

Instead of Visiting Wine Country in Italy…

How about the Fredericksburg Vineyards?

Fredericksburg is a haven for wine lovers! With over 60 wineries scattered around the Hill Country, you’ll find a vast array of options. Explore wineries housed in historic buildings and sip your way through beautiful landscapes. Many wineries even have connecting trails, making it easy to turn your visit into a multi-stop adventure.

I bet you didn’t even know this was a thing! Well, let me tell you, it a pretty crazy fun experience!

Carved by ancient winds, these towering mountains of soft sand stretch for miles. Unlike most, they’re constantly shifting, creating a landscape that’s always changing. Hike the ever-changing dunes, sandboard down the slopes, or simply soak in the beauty of this unique Texas wonder.

Instead of Visiting the Taj Mahal in India…

Get a little view of an incredible Hindu Temple right outside of Houston in Sugar Land. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir invites guests to respectfully enter and see their temple while learning about the faith.

Not only is it the first traditional Hindu Mandir in North America, but it’s also a marvel of intricate craftsmanship. Built in just 18 months with over a million volunteer hours, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a place of worship that offers a place of peace, spiritual connection, and cultural exploration for visitors of all backgrounds.

How about going to the WurstFest in New Braunfels?

Held for ten glorious days near the refreshing Comal River, this one-of-a-kind festival offers a smorgasbord of fun. Of course, no Wurstfest is complete without its star attraction – delicious sausages! This family-friendly event (with free entry for children under 12) is a must for anyone seeking a unique blend of German culture and Texas spirit.

Instead of Visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris…

How about visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Texas?

Standing at a much shorter 66 feet, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Texas packs a punch with its distinctly Texan flair. Built by local welders, this miniature replica boasts a giant red cowboy hat perched on top, making it a fun and unforgettable roadside attraction. This Eiffel Tower is completely free to visit and even lights up at night, showcasing the Texas flag’s colors.

You can head to the adorable town of Glen Rose and visit the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, with thousands of exotic animals and the largest cheetah breeding program. You might even get to make friends with a giraffe!

How about a romantic gondola ride in the Canals of Las Colinas in Irving? Plus, you won’t have to worry about all of the crowds!

Or you can head to Nederland, TX where they have a Windmill Museum that will make you feel like you’ve suddenly been transported to Holland, and they even have tulips out front!

Or See the World in Houston…

Houston is such a diverse city full of different cultures all in one place. Because of this, you can practically eat around the world without leaving Houston, as well as see a wide array of cultural art.

Nicknamed “Space City” for its role in NASA’s achievements, Houston offers a unique blend of down-home Texas ambiance alongside international flair. Foodies can go on a culinary world tour without ever leaving town, savoring everything from classic Tex-Mex to authentic Vietnamese pho. Art enthusiasts will find a treasure trove of cultural experiences, from world-class museums to vibrant street art scenes.

Instead of Visiting the Northern Lights…

Visit the mysterious lights in Marfa.

For over a century, these unexplained illuminations have captivated visitors, from starstruck teenagers to seasoned scientists.  Appearing as glowing orbs of various colors – red, white, and blue – they flicker and shift in the seemingly empty desert landscape. The source of this phenomenon remains a hot topic. While some point to car headlights or campfires, others hold onto the belief of something more extraordinary.

This is another corny one, but just being out in Marfa, you’ll be surprised with the gorgeous view of the stars. Plus, a trip to El Cosmicos and the Prada installation make it 100% worth the trip.

Instead of Dancing Polka in the Czech Republic…

Czech out the Ennis Polka Festival! Ennis hosts a National Polka Festival every year where people travel around the country to dance, enjoy Czech music, and eat Czech food.

This lively three-day extravaganza kicks off with a festive dance featuring traditional polka music and a King and Queen Dance Contest, where donning colorful Czech costumes (kroj) is highly encouraged. Witness a vibrant parade filled with floats, bands, and costumed participants, adding a touch of whimsy to historic downtown Ennis. Over the weekend, take in the Czech culture at three spacious halls featuring live music, dancing, delicious food, and religious customs.

You can check out the brilliant, gold Buddhist temple near Austin, Texas where they invite you inside to learn about the culture.

Check out this incredible restaurant in Dripping Springs that was once an old Vietnamese town house. The owners of Tillie’s shipped it all the way here for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Check out the French town of Castroville, complete with its own Alsatian home, Alsatian food, and culture. There is much to do in this cute, little, French Texas town!

Founded by Alsatian immigrants in 1844, stroll past beautifully preserved buildings lining the streets, some converted to shops and restaurants. Grab a map and pastries from the famed Haby’s Bakery, and for a cool escape, visit Paradise Canyon, a swimming oasis with clear waters.

Why not check out Dublin Texas where you will find Irish roots and influence, a great St. Patrick’s Day festival, and other fun things to do!

Dublin, Texas, the self-proclaimed “Irish Capital of Texas,” offers a weekend escape packed with unique experiences. Explore Dublin Bottling Works, the original bottler of Dr. Pepper using pure cane sugar for a taste of history. Experience the Irish heritage at Things Celtic, where you can shop for gifts, food, and even custom-made kilts.   • Paris, Texas – Named after the French capital, Paris, Texas offers a taste of Texas atmosphere with a touch of Eiffel Tower whimsy. See the 65-foot replica Eiffel Tower topped with a red cowboy hat, a fun and unexpected roadside attraction!
  • Berlin, Texas – Berlin has a historic downtown area and is known for its annual peach festival.
  • New Braunfels, Texas – Founded by German immigrants in 1845, New Braunfels offers a true taste of German culture.  Indulge in sausages, music, and dancing at the annual Wurstfest, a ten-day celebration of German heritage.

Founded by French Canadians in the 1760s, this small village is known for its French Colonial architecture and cuisine.

There are so many things to do in the Lone Star State without having to look far. With a state as large as several countries, there’s so many diverse things to do! I started writing this because I was missing some of my trips abroad and I’m so glad I got creative making the most out of my state. Mix all of this in with visiting internationally based restaurants and hosting your own themed nights and your international dream might just happen right here in Texas!
