Sometimes, a quick getaway is all you need — not a full-blown vacation, but something quick and refreshing to reset. The good news is, San Antonio is surrounded by some pretty amazing spots that are perfect for a day trip. You don’t have to go far to find rolling hills, small towns with big character, and places where history feels alive.

I’ve taken little drives in just about every direction from San Antonio, and I’m always surprised by what’s out there. So, if you’re itching for a change of scenery without the long haul, I’ve got a few go-to favorites that’ll make you feel like you’ve really gotten away. Let’s hit the road and discover the best day trips just an hour from San Antonio that will make your one-day adventure into a weekend getaway!

New Braunfels

Located just a short drive north of San Antonio, New Braunfels offers multiple attractions for day-trippers. Take a leisurely float down the Comal River or challenge yourself on the whitewater rapids of the Guadalupe River.

Go on a guided tour 200 feet underground at Natural Bridge Caverns or an African safari at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. Enjoy incredible shopping downtown and sample some of the town’s favorite local food, including German cuisine!

Don’t miss out on a visit to Schlitterbahn Waterpark, one of the largest water parks in Texas, offering endless water activities for all ages, or their 10-day festival, Wurstfest, which takes place at the beginning of November.

Gruene

Head over to Gruene, an idyllic little town in New Braunfels County. Visit the area’s unique shops, galleries, and local restaurants, such as Gristmill Restaurant & Bar, a multi-story establishment with seating that overlooks the treetops.

Be sure to stop by Gruene Hall, the longest continuously operating dance hall in the country!

Not much for dancing? How about some wine tasting? Grapevine is a local tasting room that serves German and New Age wines with patio seating and live music.

San Marcos

When the temperatures cool down, explore the Upper Purgatory Trail, play disc golf at Flying Armadillo, and visit Wonder World Park. Or, visit San Marcos during their Mermaid Festival in September!

Castroville

Castroville is home to dozens of historic buildings, charming shops, art galleries, and antique stores. Enjoy a delicious meal at one of Castroville’s iconic restaurants or sample local delights, such as handmade kolaches, at Haby’s Alsatian Bakery.
