Nestled among the rugged landscapes of the Texas Hill Country are the fossilized footprints along the Leander Dinosaur Tracks.

To get there, head to where the South San Gabriel River crosses Hwy 183, just north of Leander. Use GPS or a map to reach 601 S. Gabriel Dr, Leander, Texas 78641, which will take you to the parking area.

From there, you’ll hike along the riverbed to uncover the hidden dinosaur tracks. There aren’t any signs that point them out, but the footprints are pretty prominent. As we were walking we kept wondering if we’d miss them, but they ended up being pretty obvious.

You can enjoy fishing, non-motorized boating, and wildlife observation on the lake.   • Lake Travis Scuba – Their custom pontoon boat, Giant Stride, provides a comfortable and well-equipped diving experience. You will be fully prepared for underwater exploration with 8 diver stations and ample storage.

Things to Do Near Leander

Do some exploring in these towns just a short drive from Leander:

  • Liberty Hill (15 minutes) – go hiking, camping, visit distilleries/breweries or a winery, and eat yummy waffles or seafood
  • Round Rock (25 minutes) – the country’s largest indoor waterpark, downtown shopping, a ballpark with crazy food, and the coolest bowling alley
  • Georgetown (30 minutes) – Waterfall at Blue Hole, boating on Buchanan Lake, spelunking at Inner Space Caverns, wine tours, and antiquing
  • Spicewood (1 hour) – go on a canopy tour, sleep in a treehouse, swim at Krause Springs, rent a boat, and visit local wineries

My time in Leander, Texas, was an absolute blast! I was captivated by this charming town’s warm and welcoming atmosphere from the moment I arrived. The friendly locals and sense of community made me feel right at home.

I had the opportunity to indulge in flavorful, local cuisine, explore the area’s natural beauty with its picturesque parks and scenic trails, and the vibrant art scene added an extra layer of charm, with local artists showcasing their talent in unique and inspiring ways.

Leander has a special place in my heart now and I’m counting the days until I can visit again!
