Often called “Cozy in Comfort” by the locals due to its rustic Bavarian charm and cold weather, Comfort is a perfect go-to gateway for travelers seeking both relaxation and excitement. 

Whether you want to access various activities like shopping at antique stores, wine tastings, or planning a short (or long) getaway near San Antonio, Comfort provides all this and much more!

Things to Do in Comfort TX

Catch a Live Show at Comfort Little Theater

Experience live entertainment at the Comfort Little Theater, a small, historic home that has been converted into a local venue.

Their annual spring show runs for four nights – from the last weekend in April through the first weekend in May. The cast and crew is entirely made up of volunteers and their performances are largely influenced by input from locals. As such, their shows focus on adult topics and humor.

If you aren’t able to make it to Comfort during this time, the theater itself is a unique photo op!

Learn About Knitting, Needlepoint, & More at the Tinsmith’s Wife

If you’re into needlecraft, The Tinsmith’s Wife is a paradise with multiple rooms filled with different items. It’s home to fine materials and supplies for crocheting, cross-stitching, and knitting. 

We even took their needlework classes and learned various embroidery stitches like Bullion Knot, Colonial Knot, and Ladder Stitch. 

Don’t forget to say hi to their cat ambassador as you learn stitching and enjoy a cup of tea.

Visit the Old Tunnel State Park

Curious to see a colony of bats? Visit the Old Tunnel State Park – the smallest state park in Texas with millions of bats May through October.

Bats roost in the tunnel during these months, and you can watch their nightly emergence for free from the upper viewing area. The lower viewing area is open Thursday to Sunday evenings for a $2 fee per person, regardless of age. 

Bats often come out after 7pm, but it depends on how they feel. Remember to arrive early, and if you have time, dine at Alamo Springs Café for a wonderful added treat. 

Along with bat-watching, you can picnic, bird-watch, hike, stargaze, and spot wildlife. The nature trail is open daily from sunrise to 5pm, and there’s no entrance fee!

Go Swimming at James Kiehl Natural Area

James Kiehl River Bend Park is a 25-acre park with diverse habitats, wildlife, and recreational activities. You can go fishing and kayaking in surrounding waters or picnic with your loved ones under shaded canopies. 

If you love hiking, there are multi-use trails, and you can swim freely at the James Kiehl Natural Area and other crossings for more aquatic adventures. 

It’s also great for birdwatching and even has a bat house!

Take Pictures at Cartoon Saloon

Visit the quirky Cartoon Saloon, an unusual Texas roadside attraction that harks back to the Old West. 

Though it’s not a working saloon, it offers unique photo opportunities and an art gallery of cowboy cartoonist artwork. There’s even a beer fridge where you can snag a cold one (for a cash donation). If you’re lucky, you may even catch an impromptu live performance!

Visit Magnolia Gasoline Company

Explore the charming Magnolia Gasoline Company building on Avenue A & Highway Business 87. While it’s currently for sale, it’s still worth a visit to admire the vintage gas pumps and nostalgic atmosphere.

Create Art at Studio Comfort Texas

Get Your Favorite Chocolate from Alley On High

Alley on High is a charming, local, woman-led gift shop that offers chocolates, apparel, faith souvenirs, and sweet treats.

You can also find honey, jams, bath products, and a delightful selection of gourmet foods. Their chocolate is sourced from Sweet Shop USA in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

Visit Marquardt Garage

Located near Sister Creek Vineyard, Marquardt Garage is a former auto repair shop that closed in 2019, with a history dating all the way back to 1942! Now, it’s a really cool, rustic photo op.

See the Hygieostatic Bat Roost

The Hygieostatic Bat Roost is a shingle-style structure built in Comfort in 1918, standing over 30 feet tall. Its purpose was to attract and house bats as a means to combat the spread of malaria by reducing the mosquito population.

This structure is the only one of 16 built across the country that still remains, but you can still watch a colony of bats take flight from it at dusk!

Visit Hill Country Pottery 

In the quaint, picturesque town of Comfort, Hill Country Pottery provides an art gallery and studio in a beautifully restored historic barn from West Texas.

Their collection includes pottery by Brian Burckhardt and regional artists, including sculptors and painters. The use of local cedar ash creates a unique glaze.

Hill Country Pottery prioritizes environmental stewardship with a rainwater collection system and locally sourced clay to reduce their carbon footprint.

Where to Eat in Comfort TX

Flamingo Street Gourmet Fusion Cuisine

If fine dining and good food are what you crave, we recommend Flamingo Street Gourmet Fusion Cuisine. From mouthwatering stuffed mushrooms and juicy steak to classic burgers and pasta, you can easily satisfy your taste buds. 

Not to mention, the restaurant’s cute tropical interior complements the fusion cuisine for a memorable dining experience. It’s a great place to dine in Comfort’s downtown area!

Toucan Jim’s                                         

Take a short scenic drive to Center Point and visit Toucan Jim’s – a colorful beach bar-inspired spot with funky signs and vibrant island-themed tables. 

It offers a nice selection of contemporary art, live music, and a great atmosphere, for a memorable dining experience. 

Alamo Springs Café

Technically in Fredericksburg but worth the short drive from Comfort, Alamo Springs Cafe is renowned for its burgers. In fact, it’s one of our favorite fast-food spots in all of Texas and is often featured on various magazine covers!

You can watch them prepare your meal, enjoy live music, and customize your burger with toppings like mushrooms, roasted garlic, or pickle spears.

It’s a one-of-a-kind café that serves delicious food in a laid-back, small-town atmosphere you’ll surely fall in love with. 

Bella Sera of Comfort

Take a break from your fun-packed trip at Bella Sera of Comfort and indulge in a sumptuous Italian meal. 

Start with the garlic knots, and don’t forget to add extra garlic and olive oil sauce for dipping. Explore their menu, featuring dishes like Eggplant Parmesan and Cheese Ravioli. 

You’ll enjoy a culinary journey right in the heart of Comfort.

Food for the Soul Bistro

If you want to have quality cuisine with sandwiches and soups, Food for the Soul Bistro is your place. It’s a busy spot for weekend dinner and lunch. 

Their menu offers a variety of dishes, including burgers, salads, sandwiches, soups, and more. 

We made reservations for their popular Friday steak nights –  and it was worth it! Make sure you do the same if you love a good, juicy steak. 

Zanzenberg Tavern

End your day with a delightful dinner at Zanzenberg Tavern, including a Wild Game Wine Dinner with Newsom Wines for $125. 

This farm-to-table experience takes place in the county’s oldest historic building and offers a menu centered around local ingredients. The restaurant even has an Airbnb above it for an immersive experience.

Sibohains Downright Comfort & Just Pies

Sibohains Downright Comfort & Just Pies is a perfect spot to savor comfort food in Comfort. Indulge in a delightful meal complete with their scrumptious pies.

Comfort Pizza

One of the famous pizza restaurants among visitors and locals is Comfort Pizza. 

Housed in a renovated 1920s gas station, you can watch the staff roll and spin the dough in the back. They’re known for their hand-tossed, delicious pizzas cooked to perfection in stone ovens. 

It’s a top choice for families, couples, and friends. They also offer appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and a wide selection of wine from local and international sources, along with beer and unique sodas.

If you’re a Pokémon fan, you’ll love the facility as it’s a verified Pokémon store with weekly league and Meet Tuesday nights.

Don’t forget the local Skyline Gelato and the dog-friendly backyard!

La Calabria Pizzeria & Catering

Check out the La Calabria Pizzeria and Catering – known for their house-made dough and wood-fired pizzas.  

You can order a variety of Sicilian-style and wood-oven pizzas, such as the Calabrian Bee Sting and Pasta Alla Vodka. 

Don’t miss their delightful desserts! Our personal favorites were the Tiramisu and Peach Cobbler. You can also enjoy tea or wine with reservations.

Coffee Shops in Comfort TX

Comfort Coffee Co. & 8th Street Mercantile

Kickstart your day or get that afternoon boost with a fresh brew at Comfort Coffee Co., housed inside the 8th Street Mercantile (the former Ford Motors Factory). 

Upon stepping inside, you’ll be greeted with an irresistible aroma of freshly brewed coffee and a range of bakery items and coffee drinks to choose from. 

In addition to coffee, you can explore the vintage market, which houses a slew of indoor and outdoor booths with unique treasures like old doors, statues, signs, and windows. 

It’s a beautifully curated place with so much to look at, making it easy to wander around for hours!

The Lobby Coffee 

Formerly a community theater, The Lobby Coffee offers breakfast items, pastries, and a wide selection of coffees and teas. You can enjoy aptly cooked breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, bacon, and more!

We recommend their bagels, lattes, and teas – they will become your favorite items once you try them. It’s the perfect place to kickstart your morning in Comfort and play board games while having breakfast. 

Wander N Calf Espresso Bar 

Begin your day with a visit to Wander n Calf Espresso Bar – your local coffee haven in Comfort TX. They’re famous for their artisan-roasted coffee and scratch-made treats. You can pair your coffee with various scratch-baked goods like brownies, cookies, and muffins. 

We really liked their Peach Pie, blueberry scones, chocolate chip banana bread, cinnamon rolls, and bacon cheese scones. Whether you’re a coffee or tea lover, they have you covered!

It’s also a welcoming spot for local and wanderers alike, offering both cozy celebrations or solo relaxation. 

Hens & Heifers

Hens & Heifers is a popular coffee shop with a range of small goods you can purchase. Two great reasons to stop by. At least, we did!

They provide a selection of baked goods such as muffins and macarons, tea, and coffee. Inside, you’ll find the original Comfort mural, weathered by four years of sun, giving it a vintage look.

Shopping in Comfort TX

Comfort Vintage & Blooms 

For home décor and unique finds, Comfort Vintage & Blooms is a must-visit. This floral and design shop has an extensive selection of antique treasures, fake florals, fake food, and even books!

The owners, who are world travelers, have infused the shop with a global flair. 

The Elephant Story 

If you ever visit Comfort, Texas, you need to go to the Elephant Story – a shop that combines fine art with a rich history. 

We were absolutely stunned to find Thai crafts and elephant-themed items in this old historic building. The not-for-profit shop sells fair trade products and donates 100% of the proceeds to support elephant rescue and education.

Redefined Antiques

Believe it or not, one of the best antique shops you can come across in Comfort, Texas, is Redefined Antiques. Not only does this boutique offer a range of home décor and jewelry at affordable prices, but you can also sample wines.

Make sure to try their Lemon Moscato, a new, fruity, refreshing wine. You’ll be amazed – like we were – how cordially they welcome customers. 

Peachy Llama

When you visit Comfort, Texas, one store you must go to is Peachy Llama – a store as unique as its name. It has local handmade goods like soaps, glittery denim jackets, goat milk products, and more!

You can even customize your t-shirts, tumblers, charcuterie boards, and hats with their in-house printing and engraving services. 

Plus, they offer free beer and events with cocktails, wine, and crafts. They even have a huge crispy peanut brittle – bigger than your hands. 

America Reclaimed

America Reclaimed is one of the biggest antique furniture stores in town, so be sure to add it to your list of things to do in Comfort! It’s home to a 10,000-square foot, historic lumber-yard with architectural salvage, hand-hewn beams, reclaimed lumber, and global antiques.

As you stroll through, you’ll find vintage leather chairs, chesterfield couches, cowhide chairs, reversed paintings, and meticulously restored Shakespearean-style leather. 

Owners Sarah and Brian Kleinwachter bring over 35 years of expertise in scouring the country for antiques and creating handmade, custom furniture and decor.

Monogram 29

Monogram 29 is a hidden gem offering $10 monograms for items purchased in-store ($15 for personal items). 

This quaint shop features a variety of products, from pink party items to pet pajamas, baby and women’s clothing, jewelry, and more!

Comfort Antique Mall

For fantastic antiquing in Comfort, Texas, visit the Comfort Antique Mall in the Historic District. They offer a wide array of rare items, dating as far back as colonial times, acquired from their 30 quality, antique dealers. You’ll find furniture, home items, jewelry, toys, and more!

Enjoy the ambiance with 50s music as you shop. Despite its small appearance, the vast and ever-changing selection makes it a hidden gem on High Street.

Central Provisions

Explore Central Provisions in Center Point TX, a unique shopping destination where you can enjoy wine and beer, with live music on the weekends.

Fun Fact: Center Point also has one of three unique sculptures created by Yoshitomo Nara, a famous Japanese sculptor.

Freethinkers General Store

Step into Freethinkers General Store, where the owner’s passion for design is evident in every carefully chosen item, from clothing such as jeans to beauty products, books, and gifts. 

Most brands are Texan, and the store’s name pays homage to Comfort’s history, inspired by German intellectuals who settled here in the 1800s.

A lovely shop inside an old home, Simply Comfort provides a variety of gifts, women’s clothes, baby clothes, stationery, home goods, and even a men’s section!

Salvaged Souls Vintage Market

At Salvaged Souls Vintage Market, browse through a unique collection of vintage items and find treasures that tell a story. 

It has various rustic-style décor and fixtures to choose from. And if you feel hungry, they serve some of the best food in town!

Where to Drink in Comfort TX

Wineries

Bending Branch Winery

Bending Branch Winery – crafting the best, award-winning wines for two decades – offers everything from crisp whites to full-bodied reds. 

You can sample five wines for $30, including a souvenir wine glass. Explore their unique offerings, such as the Bending Branch 1840 and ChickenDuck Bourbons, named after the friendly chickens that roam the vineyards.

They’re known for being the first in Texas to use cryomaceration, which brings out more color and flavor. It’s also the only place in Texas with flash détente, which extracts more color, tannin, and flavor.

Bending Branch Winery hosts various events, including viticulture seminars, harvest season tastings, and private label club access for an exclusive experience. 

Dr. Bob, the owner, is an extraction expert, and the winery is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts looking to enjoy a glass of wine amidst the rolling hills of Comfort.

Sister Creek Vineyards

Located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country in Sisterdale/Boerne, Texas, Sister Creek Vineyards is just a short 20-minute drive away from Comfort. It offers European-style wines in a historic gin mill.

You can take a self-guided tour and enjoy some of the best wines by local winemakers on the lovely outdoor patio, shaded by a massive tree.

Newsom Vineyard

Newsom Vineyard is a must-visit if you want to savor exceptional wine. We love that they offer wines made from 100% Newsom grapes. As one of the oldest vineyards in Texas, it provides a historical wine-tasting experience. We enjoyed a tasting of five wines for $20.

You can learn about their reserve tasting options and their legacy as the first to plant Tempranillo vines from their owners: Neal, Janice, and Nolan Newsom. 

Newsom Vineyards has the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines in Texas, making them a go-to for many Texan wine enthusiasts. Their philosophy is to keep it simple and let the grapes shine, resulting in unique wines each year. 

The owner is actively involved in the community, providing gourmet meals to organizations like Meals on Wheels.

Singing Water Vineyards

Singing Water Vineyards offers a premier Hill Country experience with over seven acres of vineyards, a historic German-style barn tasting room, and scenic viewing decks. 

Visitors can enjoy five award-winning wines while honoring veterans through their stories and pictures on the walls.

Ursa at Branch On High

Stop by Ursa at Branch On High for a wine tasting or explore various kinds of spirits and delight in the flavors of the region.

Savor Ursa Vineyard’s wines crafted by Greg Stokes and Deborah Elissagaray, a husband and wife team, in California’s Sierra Foothills.

Huckleberry’s

Huckleberry’s is a wine/beer bar and shopping destination. This unique spot boasts a spacious back alley with TVs, making it an ideal location for fitting some relaxation on your list of things to do in Comfort TX.

Hill Country Distillers 

Hill Country Distillers is a family-operated distillery that offers quality Texas spirits. They use local ingredients, avoid corn or grains, and maintain a natural process – without any additives and chemicals. They also craft the tastiest Jalapeño and Prickly Pear spirits. 

Their small-batch, quality-focused approach has led to “Craft Spirits” and other types of seasonal brandy. We enjoyed their tastings, relaxed in the cocktail bar, and soaked in the live music.

Open on Fridays (2pm – 6pm) and Saturdays (12pm – 6pm), this distillery is a must-visit for mixology enthusiasts. 

Chief Vodka Call

Chief Vodka Call is the perfect place to sample local spirits. Explore unique vodka offerings and enjoy a glass of their finest concoctions. This tasting is sure to be a memorable part of your list of things to do in Comfort TX.

The Meyer Hotel

If you want to start your trip to Comfort TX with a bang like we did, we recommended staying at the Meyer Hotel – originally built by German emigrants in 1854, the first year the town was founded.

Nestled in the heart of Comfort, the hotel is a perfect tranquil retreat with a blend of historic charm and modern amenities.

This boutique hotel provides a delightful stay amidst the beautiful Texas Hill Country and features 41 amazingly appointed rooms, each with their own distinctive character and style. 

During your stay, enjoy the fresh air and on-site swimming facilities, go horseback riding, and plan a scenic picnic in the surrounding area. We found it to be the perfect starting point for your Comfort adventure!

Camp Comfort

Camp Comfort is a charming boutique hotel in Comfort TX with a rich history. Originally, it was an athletics club and bowling alley during the late 1800s. Today, it’s the perfect blend of rustic and chic.

Enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, canoeing, and camping by the fire pit with family and friends along the Private Cypress Creek Frontage. They provide supplies for s’mores, too!

The Social Hall offers a special event space and stage with picturesque views for your celebrations.

​Annual Events in Comfort TX

  • Music in the Park: This free concert series and features a variety of live bands playing a range of musical genres, from bluegrass to country. In addition to the music, attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and relax while enjoying the performances. The concerts are held from May through October.
  • Comfort Art Festival: Artists greet shoppers and display their work both inside and outside of Comfort’s local restaurants, boutiques, specialty stores, and other venues. The festival has become a Hill Country tradition, with dozens of area artists participating each year.
  • Scarecrow Invasion: During the Scarecrow Invasion, the town and surrounding countryside are filled with scarecrows and fall decorations. The scarecrows start appearing around the first of October, with prime viewing typically happening throughout the month. Participants create scarecrows and put them on display for judging.
  • Harvest Fest: Downtown Comfort’s many stores hold sales and specials alongside live entertainment, food, and wine.
  • Christmas in Comfort: This holiday event is one of the area’s most popular, drawing visitors to the Texas Hill Country for holiday shopping and family fun. You’ll find over 125 arts and crafts vendors, food booths, live music, and even a visit from Santa. One of the highlights of the event is a night parade in downtown Comfort.
