Spring break is the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and make some amazing memories! One of my favorite things about this season is how easy it is to plan a quick day trip or a full-on road trip with so many incredible destinations right here in Texas. I’m excited to share some of my top things to do during spring break that’ll make this time of year unforgettable!

Hiking & Camping at Big Bend National Park
If you love being surrounded by the great outdoors, hiking and camping at Big Bend National Park is a must during spring break. Spring is a perfect time to visit, as the weather is just right for outdoor activities! For nature lovers, you’ll have some of the most peaceful moments here, exploring the hiking trails and rugged desert landscapes and enjoying the stunning mountain views. Whether you’re into hiking, camping, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature, Big Bend is an unforgettable place to connect with the outdoors.
Beach Fun on South Padre Island
South Padre Island is one of Texas’ top beach destinations, and for good reason. If you’re craving some sunshine and relaxation, this place has everything you need for a fun-filled spring break. I love spending my days lounging on the beach, swimming in the warm Gulf waters. There’s always something going on, from sandcastle contests to dolphin watching.
Zilker Park in Austin
If you’re in Austin during spring break, Zilker Park is the place to be. This huge, green oasis right in the heart of the city is perfect for everything from picnics and frisbee to a relaxing afternoon by Barton Springs Pool. I love how easy it is to enjoy the outdoors here, with so many trails to explore and beautiful spots to just hang out.

Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington
If you’re in the mood for some adrenaline-pumping fun during spring break, Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington is the place to be. I’ve spent whole days here enjoying the thrilling roller coasters, exciting rides, and live shows. Whether you’re a fan of high-speed roller coasters like Titan or prefer the classic carnival-style attractions, there’s something for everyone. The park has a lively vibe and is perfect for making fun memories with friends or family.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels
Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels is a must-visit. I’ve had the best time cooling off on the water slides, floating along the lazy river, and splashing in the wave pools. The park has such a fun, laid-back atmosphere, and it’s perfect for the whole family to enjoy a good time together. Whether you’re looking to relax or get your adrenaline pumping, it’s definitely one of my go-to spots for a fun, refreshing day in the sun. They offer a pass called Spring Preview Days, which provides guests with the chance to enjoy select rides, slides, and rivers before the full park opens for the summer season.

City Exploration & Cultural Attractions
Visit the Texas State Capitol in Austin
I always make sure to stop by the Texas State Capitol when I’m in Austin. It’s such a stunning building, and walking through it feels like stepping back in time. The free guided tours are super informative, and I love learning about the history and government of Texas. Plus, the grounds are perfect for a spring stroll or even a picnic.
Museums and Art Galleries in Houston
Houston’s museums and art galleries are a must for any spring break itinerary. I especially enjoy wandering through the Museum District, where you’ll find the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There’s something for everyone, whether you love art, history, or hands-on exhibits. The best part is that many places offer free admission on certain days, which is perfect if you’re on a budget.
San Antonio’s Historic Missions
I always feel a sense of awe visiting The Alamo and the other missions along the San Antonio Missions Trail. Each site has its own story and beautiful architecture to admire. It’s a peaceful way to spend your day, and the trails connecting the missions are great for walking or biking in the spring weather.

Live Music & Festivals
SXSW in Austin
If you’re anything like me and love a mix of live music, tech, and creativity, SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin is the ultimate spring break destination. The energy in the city during this festival is contagious—everywhere you turn, there’s live music, thought-provoking panels, and incredible art installations. I’ve discovered some of my favorite bands here and even stumbled upon groundbreaking tech demos. It’s a great way to enjoy Austin’s vibrant culture and meet interesting people

Dallas Arts District
It’s the largest urban arts district in the country, and there’s so much to see and do! I love visiting the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center—they’re both world-class. Plus, there are often outdoor performances and special events happening, which make the whole area feel alive. It’s perfect for anyone who wants a mix of culture and fun. Don’t forget to grab a coffee or snack at one of the nearby cafes while soaking up the creative vibe!
Texas Bluebonnet Festival in Burnet
Spring in Texas wouldn’t feel complete without a visit to the Texas Bluebonnet Festival in Burnet. Located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, it’s a popular spot for both locals and visitors. I absolutely love how the whole town comes alive with vibrant bluebonnets and small-town charm. It’s such a picturesque place, perfect for snapping photos or just taking a stroll through fields bursting with color. The festival itself is a great place for fun, with live music, arts and crafts, and delicious food vendors.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding
One of my favorite ways to spend a sunny spring break day in Austin is kayaking or paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake. There’s nothing quite like being out on the water with the city skyline in the background—it’s both peaceful and energizing. I love that it’s such an easy activity to pick up, even if you’re a beginner. Plus, the lake is surrounded by gorgeous trails and parks, so it’s perfect for a full day of outdoor fun.

Fishing Trips on Lake Texoma
I always find fishing to be such a relaxing and rewarding experience, and Lake Texoma is one of the best spots for it! The lake is known for its striped bass fishing, and I’ve had some great catches here. Even if you’re not an experienced angler, there are guided fishing trips you can book that make it super easy and fun. It’s a fantastic way to unwind, connect with nature, and maybe even come home with dinner!
Swimming Holes in Concan Frio River
Whenever I think of an idyllic spring break day, it always includes the swimming holes along the Frio River in Concan. The clear, cool water is so refreshing, especially as the weather starts to heat up in Texas. I love how peaceful and scenic the area is—you can swim, float, or just relax by the riverbank surrounded by trees. It’s especially great for families or groups looking for a more laid-back way to enjoy the outdoors. Trust me, you’ll want to pack a picnic and spend the whole day there!
Family-Friendly Experiences
The Dinosaur Park in Cedar Creek
If you’re looking for a fun, family-friendly adventure, The Dinosaur Park in Cedar Creek is a must-visit. I loved watching the kids light up as they spotted life-sized dinosaur replicas hidden among the trees. It’s not just about the dinos—it’s also a chance to enjoy the outdoors with shaded walking trails and picnic areas. Plus, it’s an activity that keeps everyone entertained, whether you’re traveling with little ones or just a fan of prehistoric creatures like me!
Glamping in Texas
There’s something so magical about spending the night under the stars without giving up the comforts of home, and glamping in Texas offers just that. I’ve stayed at a few glamping sites, and they’re beautifully designed with cozy beds, outdoor kitchens, and even hot tubs at some locations! Spring break is ideal for glamping because the weather is perfect—not too hot and not too chilly. It’s one of the best places to enjoy family fun and unwind in nature. If you’re like me and love good food, then a Texas BBQ tour should be at the top of your spring break list. Texas is famous for its barbecue, and trust me, it lives up to the hype. I’ve tried everything from smoky brisket to juicy ribs at different BBQ joints across the state, and each has its own unique flavor.
Farmers Markets and Food Festivals
Spring in Texas means farmers markets and food festivals everywhere, and I never miss the chance to check them out during spring break. The farmers markets are filled with fresh, local produce, baked goods, and even handmade crafts. I’ve found amazing honey, fresh flowers, and the perfect snacks to take on a picnic. The food festivals are even better—they’re great for trying regional dishes and discovering new flavors.
Tex-Mex in San Antonio
Whenever I’m in San Antonio, I make it a point to indulge in some authentic Tex-Mex, and spring break is no exception! Nothing beats the blend of bold Mexican flavors with a Texas twist. There are so many fantastic spots to choose from, but I have a soft spot for the restaurants along the San Antonio River Walk. The food is mouthwatering—tacos, enchiladas, and queso galore—plus, you’re surrounded by the vibrant energy of the River Walk while dining. It’s the perfect combo of great food and a fun experience.
Unique Spring Break Experiences
Ghost Tours in Galveston Island or Houston
If you’re up for some spring break chills, then a ghost tour in Galveston or Houston is a must-try. I’ve gone on these tours before, and they’re the perfect mix of history and spookiness. Galveston’s haunted history is fascinating, with tales of spirits lingering after storms and fires from the past. Houston’s ghost tours are just as intriguing, with stories of haunted skyscrapers and eerie mansions. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it’s such a unique and entertaining way to explore these cities after dark.
Lektrik: A Festival of Lights in Dallas
Spring break evenings really light up—literally—at Lektrik, Dallas’ Festival of Lights. I went last year, and it was absolutely magical. Imagine over a million LED lights and lanterns creating glowing trails that lead you through jaw-dropping scenes. There are also incredible performances from acrobats and jugglers, which add so much excitement to the night. Plus, the artisan vendors and delicious food offerings make it feel like a giant, colorful outdoor market.
Candlelight: Rings and Dragons
I can’t even begin to describe how thrilling it was to attend Candlelight’s “Rings and Dragons” event. If you love epic soundtracks like I do, this multi-sensory musical experience is incredible. Sitting in a candlelit venue while a live quartet played themes from The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones gave me full-body chills. It’s intimate, dramatic, and downright unforgettable.
Natural Bridge Caverns: Discovery Tour
If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure, the Discovery Tour at Natural Bridge Caverns is a popular attraction that you won’t want to miss. I was completely blown away by the stunning gemstone formations and the sheer size of the underground chambers. Walking through the cool, dimly lit caverns felt like stepping into another world. After the tour, you can explore the nature trail that winds around the caverns, offering beautiful views of the area.
The guides do an amazing job of pointing out the most jaw-dropping sights, like the shimmering stalactites and towering rock formations. It’s both fascinating and fun, and it’s a great way to enjoy a unique side of Texas with friends or family. Trust me, it’s an experience you’ll be talking about long after spring break ends!
