History of First Day Hikes
First Day Hikes is part of a nationwide initiative to encourage hiking on New Year’s Day. Originating in Massachusetts in 1992 and expanding nationally in 2012, this movement, guided by America’s State Parks Alliance, has flourished into an impressive offering of over 1000 free hikes led by knowledgeable state park rangers across fifty state parks in the United States on New Year’s Day.
These hikes are intended to promote an alternate way of celebrating the new year by spending some time outside, getting a workout, and setting New Year’s resolutions right. In addition to these self-guided walks, state park visitors can enjoy bike rides, polar plunges, and paddling trips on January 1st, when they admire the magnificent outdoors of the Lone Star State.
First Day Midnight Hikes in Texas
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
Location: Fredericksburg, TX
The Midnight Summit First Day Hike on the 0.8-mile summit trail of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is the best way to welcome the dawn of 2025 beneath a starlit sky. At 11:25 P.M., rangers will lead you on a late-night hike to the top of Enchanted Rock, where you’ll celebrate the new year in style with fellow outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers right by your side. The gazebo at the Summit Trailhead will be the gathering point; be sure to come equipped with layers, binoculars, and red lights. Best of all, this New Year’s Eve hike is free to attend with park admission. Be sure to purchase a day pass ahead of time to guarantee entry.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Location: Canyon, TX
Say goodbye to 2024 with an invigorating First Day Midnight Hike on the Kiowa Trail in Palo Duro Canyon State Park! As the clock strikes midnight, you’ll hike along a 0.8-mile stretch of the Kiowa Trail, guided by knowledgeable storytellers who inspire you with tales of the First Day Hikes tradition and the beauty of new beginnings. A shuttle is available for those who prefer a one-way hike. Meet at the Mack Dick Pavilion Parking Lot and wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes, bring a headlamp or flashlight, carry 1 liter of water per person for each mile, and dress for the weather with jackets and more. Admission is included with your park entry—remember, it’s free with a Texas State Park Pass purchased before the event.

Inks Lake State Park
Location: Burnet, TX
The Midnight Hike at the Lake Trail Trailhead in Inks Lake State Park is a moderate-difficult 1-mile round-trip hike on the Upper Fisherman’s Trail. Hikers will gather at the Lake Trail trailhead at 11 PM on New Year’s Eve with warm clothes and a flashlight, and the hike will begin sharply at 11:30 PM to get to a specific spot on the trail by midnight to countdown and watch the fireworks. In case of any cancellation due to bad weather, updates will be posted on social media if there’s a reserve day for this nightly hike. Note: Please be aware that this trail features several rocky and uneven sections, which can pose challenges for younger children and individuals with varying levels of mobility. It is advisable to proceed cautiously, as the terrain may require careful navigation.

Dinosaur Valley State Park
