The Seaport Museum
History buffs will be enchanted by the Texas Seaport Museum, home to the 1877 Elissa, a national historic landmark. This fully functional tall ship offers a glimpse into texas history, commerce, and immigration. Walking aboard the Elissa was like stepping back in time, where I imagined the lives of sailors and admired the historical artifacts on display.
At the harbor, the Galveston Railroad museum is also just a short stroll away, offering another glimpse into the city’s rich transportation history.

Artist Boat
For nature lovers seeking outdoor adventures with an artistic twist, the Artist Boat is a great way to unwind. Their 4-hour kayaking adventure through Galveston Island State Park combines eco-education with creativity. You’ll paddle along scenic tidal marshes, spotting vibrant birds and gaining a deeper appreciation for galveston’s sandy shores.

The kayaking tour even includes a watercolor lesson, where you can create a keepsake of your experience.
For eco-lovers I recommend checking out this bag from Parkland which is made out of recycled plastic bottles.
Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens is one of the best places for both adults and kids alike. This popular attraction features three pyramids brimming with exciting exhibits. We chose the Rainforest Pyramid, where we walked through lush greenery with tropical birds flitting overhead. Inside, you’ll find adorable creatures and even otters to brighten your day. Moody Gardens truly stands out as a family-friendly attraction, whether you’re after nature or science exhibits.

Hang Out at the Beach
No trip to Galveston is complete without soaking in the sun at galveston’s beaches. With miles of beautiful beaches and opportunities to skimboard, build sandcastles, or just lounge near the water, you’re guaranteed a great time. Pack a picnic and head to Galveston Island State Park, where there are picnic tables for visitors and ample space to enjoy the surroundings. The beaches provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation or some energetic fun during the summer months.
Galveston’s Historic Pleasure Pier
Are you a thrill-seeker looking for excitement? Then the galveston island historic pleasure pier is an absolute must. With rides soaring over the water and live entertainment, this pier is one of Galveston’s most iconic family-friendly attractions. Whether you’re enjoying the carousel or braving the high-flying swings, it’s a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones while soaking in the enchanting views of the Gulf.
Discover the Historic Strand District
The historic Strand District is a hub of charm, featuring unique shops, great places to eat, and stunning architecture that reflects the city’s historic charm. Stroll along the cobblestone streets, pop into local boutiques, and don’t forget to grab souvenirs for friends and family back home. The area often hosts festivals and events, adding an extra layer of fun to your day.
Other Must-Visit Historic Sites
Galveston is known for its texas history and impressive attractions. Don’t miss the chance to visit the bishop’s palace, a Victorian-style mansion that stands as both a national historic landmark and a marvel of architectural beauty. Another can’t-miss spot is the moody mansion, complete with elegant interiors and fascinating stories of Galveston’s storied past. For a more thrilling experience, consider taking a ghost tour through some of the island’s spookiest historic sites—it’s a unique way to learn about the city’s mysterious history.
Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark
For waterpark enthusiasts, Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark is an oasis of fun! With water slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools, it’s one of the best things to do during the hot summer. If you’re planning multiple visits, consider getting a season pass, which allows you unlimited access to all the splashes and laughter this incredible waterpark has to offer.
Plan a Date Night with a View
Galveston isn’t just for families; it also makes for a romantic retreat. For the ultimate date night, book a sunset cruise to experience the Gulf’s shimmering water under a painted sky. Afterward, enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the island’s many exceptional restaurants. If you’re up for something memorable, head to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., where you’ll be treated to a meal and a delightful, custom-written song created just for you.

Stay at a Luxurious, Historic Hotel

Stepping into the Tremont House is like taking a step back in history! This beautiful hotel was built the same year that Galveston was founded and served as the spot for presidents, grand balls, visitors from all over the world, and more.
The interior is absolutely stunning with the bright lights and palm trees in the middle.

And the pictures will never do justice to just how gorgeous the rooms were. High ceilings, exposed brick walls, and elegant decor create a tranquil and historic environment for a romantic evening at the hotel. We enjoyed the Tremont House so much that we often picked up food to eat in the dining area! Trust me and take the time to read all about this romantic hotel because I could not cover everything in this post! You can book your stay here.

Eat at Shark Shack

Well… order food from Shark Shack! After a long day of kayaking and beach fun we were exhausted and wanted to indulge! We ordered the Mambo Party Platter, and it did not disappoint! Bacon wrapped cheese stuffed shrimp, popcorn shrimp, fried cheese sticks, garlic bread, and Cajun shrimp fondue! As if we didn’t have enough fried foods, we added some fried pickles to the mix! Being able to eat from the comfort of our hotel was so nice and because there are so many restaurants close to the Tremont, it’s easy to pick something up and take it home or order delivery.
Celebrate Mardi Gras
One thing that I was surprised about was how popular Mardi Gras is in Galveston! If you are looking for a fun Mardi Gras experience close to home, Galveston makes a great spot for a good time with slightly less crowds.

Fun Things to Do in Galveston: Final Thoughts
Galveston is such a fun getaway Winter or Summer. While most people think of the beach, Galveston has so much art, history, and other fun things to do. If you’re looking for extra savings, consider going during the week when hotels tend to be cheaper, and the beach is less packed! Other fun things that we ran out of time to do, but are fun include walking and shopping down the strand, taking a dolphin tour, participating the Galveston Great Race, and creating a self-guided tour of the tree sculptures (art that has been created from the trees that were destroyed during the hurricane).
