Spending time in the outdoors is one of my favorite ways to connect with a place, and Llano, Texas, truly exceeded my expectations. This charming small town in the heart of the Lone Star State offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, rich history, and sweet little surprises. During my trip, I uncovered some incredible outdoor activities that I just have to share with you.
Whether you’re an adventure seeker or someone who simply loves soaking in nature, Llano has something special for everyone.
Kayaking and Water Activities at Schneider Slab and Scott’s Slab
My time at Schneider Slab and Scott’s Slab was absolutely magical. These quiet spots along the banks of the Llano River are ideal for kayaking, swimming, and even just lounging by the water with a good book. The gentle flow of the river and the sound of the breeze through the trees created a peaceful escape from everyday life.
The water here is shallow in areas, making it family-friendly if you’re bringing kids along. You can pack a picnic to enjoy on the water’s edge after paddling around. Make sure to bring sunscreen, snacks, and your camera.
There’s something so picturesque about the wide-open skies and sparkling waters at these spots making it one of the fun things to do in Llano, Texas.
Hiking at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
If you’re up for a little adventure just a short drive away, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a must-visit. It’s hard to describe the awe I felt standing at the base of this massive pink granite dome. The rock formations at the top of Enchanted Rock are truly unique. While the climb to the top is definitely a workout, the panoramic view of the heart of the Texas Hill Country is worth every step.
I recommend starting your nature hike early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds. Also, don’t forget sturdy shoes and plenty of water! Along the way, you might even spot some wildlife or blooming wildflowers, depending on the season. The views from the top of Enchanted Rock make it feel like a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else. Also, if you’re into photography, especially nightscape photography, this spot is perfect for capturing the beauty of the stars once the sun goes down.
Exploring Historic Sites in Llano
Llano’s local history is as rich as its landscapes, and I had so much fun uncovering it at two unique spots.
Llano County Courthouse
The Llano County Courthouse is a striking historic building that tells a story all on its own. Located in the heart of the town, it’s surrounded by a charming courthouse square filled with local shops and restaurants. Walking around the courthouse during the golden hour felt like stepping back in time. Its impressive architecture and beautifully landscaped grounds make it a must-see, especially for history buff like me.
Red Top Jail
Another fascinating stop was the Red Top Jail. I was completely mesmerized by the quirky and sometimes eerie stories of this historic site. The 1800s jail held plenty of drama, from prisoner escapes to determined jailers who made headlines. Exploring the building gave me chills, but it was also such a fun way to learn about Llano’s colorful past. If you’re into offbeat history or looking for a unique Texas history lesson, this spot is for you!
Llano Railroad Museum
The Llano Railroad Museum is a delightful stop that brings the town’s rich railroad heritage to life. Inside the museum, you’ll find fascinating exhibits featuring rare artifacts, vintage photos, and interactive displays. One of the highlights is the original telegraph machine used to relay critical train route information—visitors can even try sending a telegraph themselves! Another fun feature is the railroad crossing bell, which you can activate with the push of a button.
Step outside, and you’ll discover a garden-like area with historic train cars, including a 1970 caboose and a 1954 Pullman passenger car. You can climb and peek through the windows, which offer a glimpse into the past. The outdoor space is perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the vintage rail cars make for great photo opportunities.
Picnic Spots at Grenwelge Park
If you’re looking for somewhere to rest and recharge, Grenwelge Park is the perfect place to lay out a blanket and enjoy a sunny afternoon. I spent a few peaceful hours here, soaking in the views and watching the river quietly glide by. The park is a great place to relax, with its picnic tables and open spaces.
The Llano County Park is also nearby and has more opportunities for family fun. It’s a wonderful spot to bring the family for a low-key day outdoors. It’s also a great spot for photos—I found the late afternoon lighting was great for photos.
Bird Watching Along the Llano River
I’m not a hardcore bird enthusiast, but even I couldn’t help but notice the variety of birds along the Llano River. The songs and calls of the area’s feathered residents create such a calming ambiance.
This simple activity turned out to be one of my favorite experiences. I started noticing how the wildlife added so much life to the tranquil environment. Along the way, I even spotted a few deer quietly grazing near the trees—another unexpected but beautiful moment.
If you’re bringing binoculars, you’ll have even more fun catching close-up glimpses of the birds in action. It’s a peaceful nature hike that anyone can enjoy.
Walking Tour in Historic Downtown Llano
I loved spending time exploring historic downtown Llano. The streets are lined with quaint shops, local boutiques, and galleries. While you’re out and about, be sure to check out Hill Country Gifts & Wild Herbs and Chrissy’s Homestyle Bakery for a taste of local culture and charm.
This small town has plenty of hidden gems, and it’s a great place to pick up souvenirs or just enjoy the slow pace of life. You might even meet a few friendly locals along the way. It’s the perfect mix of outdoor exploration and some light shopping.
