While the City of Llano, Texas, may be a small town tucked away in the Texas Hill Country, it’s brimming with rich history, charm, and fascinating places to explore. During my short visit, I discovered some amazing hidden gems that connect the past with the present in such an engaging way.
If you’re planning a trip to Llano, here are eight historic sites you absolutely have to check out.
Walking into the Dabbs Railroad Hotel feels like stepping back into another era. Built in the early 1900s, this historic building originally served as lodging for train crews during Llano’s booming iron ore and granite industries. Over the years, it evolved from a brothel in the 1960s to a gathering space for the LGBTQ+ community in the 1980s, to a lovingly restored hotel today.
What stood out most for me was the hotel’s connection to Bonnie and Clyde. Yes, the infamous duo stayed here! There’s even a “Bonnie and Clyde Suite” commemorating their visit, which left me feeling like I’d stepped into a real-life movie. Guests also share fun (and slightly spooky) tales of ghostly figures and unexplained phenomena, but don’t worry — they’re said to be comforting spirits rather than terrifying ones. With its blend of history, charm, and quirks, the Dabbs Hotel felt like a storybook come to life.
When I first laid eyes on the Llano County Courthouse, I might have gasped a little. It looks just like a castle! This stunning stone building, completed in 1893, is a shining example of Romanesque Revival architecture. It serves as the heart of Llano’s downtown area and has been a centerpiece of the community for over a century.
The courthouse is part of the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, which makes it a must-see for history buffs. Standing there, I couldn’t help but imagine the generations of Texans who have passed through.
There’s something so magical about old theaters, and The Lantex Theater is no exception. Built in 1927, this classic theater has served as a hub for entertainment in Llano for almost a century. From hosting vaudeville shows in its early years to live concerts and movie screenings today, it’s the kind of place that instantly makes you nostalgic.
I loved how the theater still retains its vintage charm — you’ll even find classic movie theater snacks like buttered popcorn and candy. If you’re lucky, you might catch a special performance or live music event during your visit. It’s such a cozy, timeless venue that makes every event feel just a little extra special.
If there’s one thing Texans do well, it’s barbecue, and Inman’s BBQ is a Llano institution. This family-run business has been firing up the smoker since 1967, and their turkey sausage is the star of the show. I found it so fascinating that this now-famous sausage started as an affordable option sold at a gas station.
Today, people travel from far and wide to sample it—and trust me, it’s worth the trip.
Sitting down with a plate of smoked meat and all the fixings, I couldn’t help but appreciate the history and dedication behind every bite.
Antique lovers, prepare yourselves — Serendipity Antiques is like stepping into a treasure chest. Located in downtown Llano, this shop is packed with vintage finds, from old cameras to military memorabilia to antique phonographs to vintage fashion. Every booth has its own personality, so you never know what you’ll discover.
I spent way too much time combing through the shelves, but how could I not? I even spotted an old picnic basket and masquerade masks that I seriously considered taking home. This shop isn’t just about finding cool relics — it’s about connecting with stories from the past.
Llano has some surprisingly chic nightlife, and The Falls Bar quickly became one of my favorite spots. The upscale décor and cozy atmosphere make it a great place to unwind, but it’s the patio that really steals the show. Overlooking a bridge and the falls (hence the name), the view is absolutely stunning.
What’s even better? They host special events throughout the week, including live music and open mic nights. It’s a perfect blend of nature, history, and casual elegance.
Sometimes, the simplest places are the most memorable. Burger Bar Cafe, a community favorite since 1965, offers classic comfort food with a creative twist. Their unique burger options, like the Elvis Queso Burger (topped with fried avocado and queso), are just as delicious as they sound.
I couldn’t resist trying their fried pickles, and as a self-proclaimed fried pickle fanatic, I can confidently say these were top-notch—crispy, flavorful, and absolutely addictive.
This family-friendly cafe is the perfect spot for a laid-back, satisfying meal. Plus, it’s full of local history and nostalgia, which makes the experience even better.
One of my absolute favorite stops was the Llano Historical Museum, housed in a building that dates back to 1900. Originally a drugstore, it now serves as a repository for stories about Llano’s people and their defining moments. The special exhibits here are incredibly diverse, covering everything from Native American artifacts to the town’s mining heritage.

I was thrilled to discover the Llano Railroad Museum, housed in a beautifully restored train depot that’s brimming with history. The museum highlights the vital role railroads played in Llano’s development, starting with the arrival of the first train in 1892. Back then, the Austin and Northwestern Railroad linked Llano to larger cities like Austin, transporting not just passengers but also iron deposits, livestock, cotton, and granite.
The museum is a great way to appreciate how trains helped shape the town into what it is today.
This Llano County jail, called Red Top Jail, is one of the most iconic historic landmarks in town. Built in 1895, this four-story structure is noted for its unique red roof, which gives the jail its name.
Walking through, I got chills at the stories surrounding this place. The cells still bear the imprints of lives once lived within its walls, making it feel like history is etched into every corner.
The jail is rumored to be haunted, and while I didn’t encounter anything spooky, the atmosphere was enough to give me goosebumps. It’s now open for tours, and I’d highly recommend this unique experience if you enjoy historic buildings with a side of mystery.
