Lake Houston’s Juneteenth Celebration at Generation Park is a free event that honors the historic day in 1865 when General Order No. 3 was announced. Union Army Major General Gordon Grant issued the order, liberating over 250,000 enslaved Black individuals in Texas.

This event also honors the extensive contributions of African Americans to American music, food, art, business, and culture. This thought-provoking film, directed by the talented Holly Charles-Pearson, M.A., explores an alternate history in which formerly enslaved Black people set out on a journey back to Africa following the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The event, set to coincide with Juneteenth, will be hosted by Texas Radio Hall of Famer and Majic 102.1 radio personality Madd Hatta.

Aside from the screening of ‘If They Took Us Back’, attendees can enjoy an exclusive mini documentary on the making of the film. They will also feature captivating live musical performances by Daniel Fears. The event includes an array of live vendors, art exhibits, engaging panel discussions, and Q&A sessions with the film’s cast and writer/director. The screening will takeette at 3 PM and 7 PM. This allows audiences to choose the time that suits them best.
