If you want to plan a Texas trip in May without turning it into an expensive festival weekend, this is the list I would start with. I kept this guide tighter on purpose and focused on the free May events in Texas that actually feel worth building a real outing around.
Everything below is either fully free or has a clearly useful free attendance path. If an event felt too ticket-driven or too similar to the bigger statewide roundup, I saved it for my full May events in Texas guide so this post can stay honest about the free promise.
Just like the main guide, I used official 2027 dates whenever they are already live. When exact 2027 dates are still pending, I only kept recurring May events with official pages that clearly show they are ongoing, so this does not turn into a random old list that is useless by next spring.
How to Use This List
For free events, I always like to double check parking, registration requirements, and whether the free part is actually the main attraction. May is especially good for that in Texas because so many downtown festivals, art walks, concert series, and community weekends really do give you a solid experience without needing much more than good timing.
Seasonal Texas Events
- Where to Pick Berries: Berry season is one of the easiest ways to turn a free May event into a full day trip without adding much extra cost.
- Where to Pick Flowers in Texas: If you are trying to keep your May trip pretty and affordable, this is another easy seasonal add-on.
- Other Texas Festivals: If you finish this list and still want more statewide ideas, this is a good next stop.
By City
Austin
- Pecan Street Festival: This is one of the easiest free May events in Texas to recommend because it really does feel like a full event, not just a pop-up market. Visit Austin describes it as a free two-day arts festival held the first Saturday and Sunday in May. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 spring festival ran May 9-10.
- O. Henry Pun-Off World Championships: If you want something that feels very Austin without being expensive, this is such a fun pick. The City of Austin’s official event page says admission is free and keeps the whole thing rooted in Austin’s long-running pun-loving tradition. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 event was May 9.
- Cine Las Americas Free Screenings: This is a good option if you want a cultural event that still works on a budget. The festival’s own submission materials note that the annual May film festival includes free-to-the-public screenings, which makes it one of the better artsy free adds in Austin. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 festival ran May 13-17.
Boerne
- Boerne Lemonade Day: This is such a sweet one if you want a free event that still feels like a real community tradition. The Boerne Chamber says it happens the first Saturday in May, with young lemonade stand owners spread around town. Official 2027 date not posted yet; the chamber lists it as a first-Saturday-in-May tradition.
- Hill Country Art & Wine Festival: If you want something free that still feels polished enough for a day trip, this is a strong Boerne option. The official festival pages describe the main festival day as free and open to the public, with art booths, music, and downtown Hill Country atmosphere. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 festival ran May 22-23.
Corpus Christi
- Buc Days Rally Night Parade: If you want Buc Days energy without immediately paying festival admission, this is an easy entry point. Watching the parade is still one of the best free ways to soak up the bigger event atmosphere.
- Driscoll Children’s Parade: This is a really good free family pick because it keeps the parade energy but feels a little more kid-centered and easygoing. It stays part of the official Buc Days lineup and works especially well for daytime plans.
- First Friday ArtWalk: This is one of the best free downtown May events in South Texas if your trip lands early in the month. Downtown Corpus Christi says the monthly ArtWalk brings vendors, exhibitions, live music, and food into a walkable stretch of downtown.
Dallas
- Choctaw Cover-to-Cover Music Festival: If you want a Dallas event that still feels lively and substantial without a ticket, this is a great one. Klyde Warren Park’s official pages describe it as a free music festival with tribute bands and a true summer-kickoff feel. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 festival was May 30.
- Dallas Sounds Amplified: This is a nice free add if you want live music in the city without dealing with a huge festival footprint. Klyde Warren Park keeps it as a free performance series, so it is worth checking the May calendar when planning a weekend downtown.
- KidLinks Therapeutic Music & Movement: If you are traveling with younger kids and want something simple and gentle, this is a really solid option. Klyde Warren Park’s official event pages describe it as a free music and movement session on Thursdays for little ones.
- Free Fitness Classes at Klyde Warren Park: If you want your free May plans to feel active instead of festival-heavy, Klyde Warren Park is a good one to keep open in a tab. The park’s official fitness schedule highlights yoga and other recurring free classes that make it easy to build a lower-cost Dallas morning.
Elgin
- Music in the Park: This is such an easy free Friday-night plan if you want a small-town event that still feels lively. The City of Elgin says the series runs Friday nights in April and May with live music, dancing, and activities in the park.
Frisco
- StrEATS Festival: If you want a free May festival that still has enough going on to justify the drive, this is such a good one. The official Frisco Old Town pages call out the food trucks, shopping, music, and family-friendly setup, and the 2026 event was explicitly free. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 festival was May 2.
- Frisco Starfest: This is one of my favorite lower-key free picks because it feels different from the usual market-or-concert formula. Visit Frisco describes it as a second-Saturday public star party at Frisco Commons Park.
Galveston
- Galveston ArtWalk: This is such a good free coastal option because it gives you a real event to build a night around without overcomplicating the whole trip. The official ArtWalk pages say it happens monthly on the second Saturday and stays free and open to everyone.
Georgetown
- Second Saturday Market Days: If you want one of those easy square-and-shopping kind of weekends, Georgetown is such a good free May pick. Downtown Georgetown says Market Days brings a big crowd of vendors and shoppers to the square every second Saturday.
Houston
- Party on the Plaza: If you want a free Houston night that still feels like a real event, this is a strong choice. Avenida Houston says the 2026 series returned on multiple May dates with free live music and a big downtown crowd. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 series ran on May 7, 14, and 21.
- Screen on the Green: If your ideal free plan is a relaxed outdoor movie night, this is such an easy one to recommend. Discovery Green keeps it as a free signature series, so it is worth watching as the May calendar starts filling in.
- Fitness in the Park: Discovery Green’s main fitness series is one of the best ongoing free event options in Houston if you like building movement into your trip. The official page describes it as a free outdoor fitness program with multiple class styles and no need to overthink the plan.
- Hatha Yoga at Discovery Green: If you want a free May event that still feels restorative and intentional, this is a great option. Discovery Green’s official event page says it is part of the park’s free fitness series and welcomes all fitness levels.
- Yoga en Español at Discovery Green: This is another good Houston pick if you want a free recurring event with a little more community feel than a typical class. Discovery Green includes it within the same free spring fitness lineup, which gives the park a lot of useful low-cost options in May.
Lubbock
- First Friday Art Trail: If you want an artsy May plan that does not cost much, this is one of the best free recurring events in West Texas. LHUCA says it happens the first Friday of every month and includes galleries, live music, and free trolley service.
Plano
- AsiaFest: If you want one of the best free family-friendly May festivals in North Texas, this is a really easy recommendation. The official Plano event pages describe it as a celebration of Asian cultures with performances, vendors, and demonstrations, and the 2026 listing clearly marked it as free. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 festival was May 2.
Richardson
- Cottonwood Art Festival: This is one of the strongest free art-festival options in the state if you want a May outing that still feels substantial. The official festival pages and artist resources are very direct that admission is free, and the spring event keeps a big outdoor footprint. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 spring festival ran May 2-3.
Round Rock
- Music on Main: If you want free live music that still feels like a real evening plan, this is such a good Round Rock option. Downtown Round Rock says the spring series runs weekly with music, family activities, and free parking.
San Antonio
- Síclovía: This is one of the most useful free San Antonio events if you want to actually move through the city instead of just standing in a crowd. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio calls it a free community event that opens the streets to walking, biking, and play. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the 2026 event was May 3.
- Tejano Conjunto Festival Seniors Dance: If you want a free event with a little more local culture than the average city concert, this is a really good one. The official Tejano Conjunto Festival pages say the annual festival kicks off with a free seniors dance before the main paid festival weekend begins. Official 2027 dates not posted yet; the free 2026 kickoff dance was May 14.
- Market Square Weekends: This is a good catch-all free May option if you want live music, artists, and food-stall energy without needing a special one-off ticketed event. San Antonio’s official downtown May release and Market Square event pages both make it clear that the weekend programming is free and open to the public.
Tomball
- 2nd Saturday at the Depot: This is one of the easiest free family-night events in the Houston-area orbit. The City of Tomball says admission and parking are free, and the May movie night stays part of the program’s regular spring run. Official 2027 date not posted yet; the 2026 May event was May 10.
Waco
- Brazos Nights: If you want a free downtown concert night that still feels big enough for a full evening out, this is a great Waco pick. The official Brazos Nights site had the May 2026 date posted already and keeps it positioned as one of the city’s signature free music traditions.
- Levitt AMP Waco Music Series: This is another really strong free Waco option if you want music with a community feel. Creative Waco describes it as a spring series of free concerts at Bridge Street Plaza with food trucks and local vendors folded into the experience.
Free May events can still make a trip feel really fun, especially in Texas where so many downtown concerts, art walks, park programs, and festival weekends give you a lot without requiring a big budget. That is really the lane I wanted this guide to own.
