This ultimate guide to Free Things to Do During Spring Break in Texas will make you believe that not all the finest things come with a hefty price tag!
Austin
Hike, Climb and Swim at Barton Creek Greenbelt
Spring in Austin means perfect weather for endless free outdoor activities, and the Barton Creek Greenbelt is a top spot for a day trip to outdoor fun. With over 12 miles of hiking, biking and walking trails ranging from steep climbs to bouldering terrain, here you can hike along scenic trails, bike across rugged terrain renowned for its limestone cliffs, challenge each other at rock climbing, or wade into free-access swimming areas like Twin Falls, Sculpture Falls, and Gus Fruh.
For wildlife enthusiasts, the greenbelt offers habitat for several endangered species, including the magnificent Golden Cheeked Warbler, the elusive Austin Blind Salamander, and the rare Bracted Twistflower.

Catch a Sunset at Mount Bonnell
For one of the best panoramic views of Austin, climb the 102 steps to the top of Mount Bonnell. It’s the perfect spot for a spring break picnic, a sunset photo op, or simply admiring the breathtaking scenery of the Colorado River, Lake Austin and the city skyline. It’s one of the highest points in the city with the most rewarding (and Instagram-worthy) panoramic landscapes, especially at sunset.
Once you reach the top, retreat at the view deck and pavilion equipped with picnic tables to enjoy a free family picnic against the backdrop of Austin sunset.

Kayak or Bike Around Lady Bird Lake
While renting a kayak or paddleboard can be pricey, you can explore Lady Bird Lake for free by walking or biking along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. This 10-mile loop offers gorgeous views of the water, the city skyline, and downtown Austin.
