If you want to plan a fun March Texas trip without watching your budget disappear in one weekend, this is the list I’d start with. I tightened this guide to the free March events in Texas that feel most worth the drive, not every single free thing I could technically add.
I kept this guide strict on purpose: everything below is either fully free or has a clearly useful free attendance option. If an event mostly revolves around paid admission, or if it felt too similar to the bigger statewide roundup, I saved it for my full March events in Texas guide so this post stays true to the “free” promise.
Just like the main March guide, I used official 2027 dates whenever they are already live. When exact 2027 dates are still pending, I only included events with official pages that clearly show they return every March.
How to Use This List
For free events, I always recommend checking two things before you go: parking details and whether the free part is actually the main event or just an afterthought next to paid upgrades. A lot of the best March events in Texas really are free to attend, but you may still want to plan ahead for parking, food, or optional add-ons once the final 2027 details are posted.
By City
Washington-on-the-Brazos
- Texas Independence Day Celebration: If you want a free March event that feels unmistakably Texas, this is a great one. The official site confirms the annual celebration includes an opening ceremony, parade, living history scenes, demonstrations, and performances around Texas Independence Day. Check the event page for the final 2027 schedule once it is posted.
Lewisville
- St. Paddy’s Texas Style: Lewisville already has the exact 2027 date posted, which makes this one especially easy to plan around. The city frames it as a St. Patrick’s Day and Texas Independence Day celebration in Old Town, and the event pages note that admission and most activities are free. March 13, 2027
Mansfield
- World’s Only St. Paddy’s Pickle Parade & Palooza: If you want a free March event that is quirky enough to feel like a real road-trip reason, this is a good one. The official site treats the parade and palooza like a full downtown celebration with family-friendly fun, and the Historic Downtown Mansfield page makes it clear this is an annual spring-break-in-March tradition.
Houston
- Frida Festival: If you want a free March event in Houston that feels artsy and a little different, this is a good one to keep on your radar. The official site calls 2026 the festival’s 21st year, and the March festival day includes art, culture, and community programming tied to Frida Kahlo’s legacy. Official 2027 date not posted yet; the 2026 festival was March 28.
- Houston St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Visit Houston explicitly calls this a free family-friendly event, and it gives you another big-city March option outside of Dallas and San Antonio. The parade has more than 100 entries and enough downtown energy to feel like a real outing instead of a quick stop.
Galveston
- Galveston ArtWalk: If you want a free coastal event that still feels like a reason to make the drive, this is a good one to keep in the mix. It is self-guided, easy to pair with a weekend on the island, and does not feel watered down just because there is no admission ticket.
San Antonio
- St. Patrick’s River Walk Celebrations: San Antonio’s River Walk page is already pointing to a March 2027 return, and the best part is that you can enjoy a lot of it for free. Public viewing for the green river, parade atmosphere, and artisan show make this one of the most fun free March event weekends if you want a bigger-city trip.

Houston Heights
- First Saturday Arts Market: If you want a free March event in Houston that feels more browse-and-stroll than giant parade chaos, this is a really good one. The market runs on the first Saturday of the month with artists, live music, and a casual outdoor setup that works well for a slower spring weekend.
Bryan
- First Friday in Historic Downtown Bryan: This is one of my favorite kinds of free events for a March road trip because the whole downtown turns into the entertainment. Destination Bryan describes live music, art demos, performances, and interactive activities, so it feels like more than just a quick market stop.
Palestine
- Free Dogwood Festival Art Show: If you want a spring East Texas weekend that feels artsy as well as scenic, this is a great free add. The Dogwood Arts Council highlights the show as part of the bigger dogwood celebration season, which makes Palestine feel like more than just a flower-drive stop.
Corpus Christi
- First Friday ArtWalk: If you want a free coastal event with a little more energy than a regular beach day, downtown Corpus Christi makes a strong case for this one. The monthly art walk spreads vendors, food trucks, live music, businesses, and activities across downtown, so it is an easy event to build a March evening around.
Lubbock
- First Friday Art Trail: This is such a nice West Texas pick if you want something creative and easy to wander. LHUCA says the trail happens every first Friday with galleries, exhibits, and free trolleys, so it works especially well if you want a free March night out without overplanning it.
Georgetown
- Market Days on the Square: Georgetown is already such an easy spring day trip, and this gives you a free event to actually time it around. The downtown association lists the market on the second Saturday from March through November, which makes it a simple fit for a budget-friendly March outing.
McKinney
- Guided Historic Walking Tour: If you want a quieter free March event that still gives your trip a little structure, this one is a really nice option. Visit McKinney says the guided tours happen on the second Tuesday of each month, so it works well for anyone who loves pretty downtowns and local history more than festival crowds.
San Marcos
- First Friday Handmade Market: San Marcos is a great March stop anyway, and this gives you a free first-weekend event with local makers and a more laid-back downtown feel. It is a good fit if you want something smaller and more browseable than the state’s giant spring festivals.
- Art Squared Arts Market: If your March trip lands later in the month, this is another San Marcos event worth watching. The market runs on the second Saturday from March through December, so it gives this guide another recurring free option that still feels curated instead of random.
Nacogdoches
- Azalea Season in Nacogdoches: If you want a flower-focused spring trip without paying admission, this is such a pretty East Texas option. The official tourism site says azalea season typically runs from mid-March through mid-April, so it is an easy one to pair with a scenic drive, garden stops, and a slower-paced weekend.
Weslaco
- Texas Onion Fest: The Weslaco chamber is very clear that this is free admission, which makes it easy to use here. Between the stages, car show, horse show, kids activities, and downtown setup, it feels substantial enough to be worth planning around instead of just being a tiny local add-on.
Mesquite
- Rodeo Day Parade & Downtown Mesquite Market: Mesquite’s annual Rodeo Day is a fun late-March option if you want a free event with more local flavor. The city highlights the parade, Western-themed fun, and the Downtown Mesquite Market as part of the celebration, so keep an eye on the city’s event updates for the 2027 edition.
Free events can still make a trip feel special, especially in March when so many Texas towns lean into public art, flower trails, downtown markets, and community festivals that do not require a big ticket budget. That is really the sweet spot I wanted this guide to hit.
