The Sonnenalp is an elevated Bavarian-inspired ski luxury resort hotel in Vail Village, among the Colorado Rocky Mountains, with warm European hospitality. As one of only 124 hotels in the United States to receive a Michelin Key, Sonnenalp is one of the best places to stay in Vail.
The resort is owned by the Faessler family, whose first generation integrated a small bed and breakfast named Sonnenalp Germany into the Allgäu Alps in 1919. Sonnenalp’s central Vail lodging location is complemented by european luxury accommodations, exceptional dining, a Ski Concierge Service, a Pampering Spa Facility, 4 Award-Winning Restaurants, and an upscale European Bar.
On my recent escape to this mountain town, I chose Sonnenalp Resort as my home base. Without any second-guessing, the experience exceeded all expectations and ranks among the top hotels I’ve ever experienced. Sonnenalp’s Prime Location
Sitting right in the heart of Vail Village, Sonnenalp’s location couldn’t be more perfect. The most iconic attraction in Vail, Gondola 1, the main lift up Vail Mountain, is just a leisurely five-minute stroll from the hotel. It’s incredibly convenient, especially when you’re eager to hit the slopes first thing in the morning.
Within minutes of leaving the hotel, you’re on Vail’s pedestrian-friendly East Meadow Drive, lined with plenty of restaurants, boutiques, and bars. Everything was right at my fingertips, whether I was in the mood for a casual bite or a fine dining experience.
Getting around town was also a breeze. The Vail Transportation Center, where you can catch buses to East and West Vail, Avon, and Edwards, is just a five-minute walk away. Plus, the free around-town bus stops regularly in front of the hotel, making visiting Lionshead or other parts of the village easy. It’s only a quick three-minute ride, so you’re never far from the action, no matter where you want to be.
A Taste of Bavaria in the Rockies
The architecture features shingled rooftops, wooden balconies, and striped shutters, creating a rustic alpine vibe. As you wander inside, an atmospheric lobby adorned with a festive sleigh and a candle chandelier transports you to a winter wonderland. Wide passageways guide you to each room, with exposed wooden beams overhead and sturdy Bavarian furniture that evokes the hotel’s European elegance at every turn.

Luxurious Alpine Accommodations
With 112 luxury suites and 15 hotel rooms, Sonnenalp Vail’s modern European-style accommodations are pure luxury. Our balcony offered stunning views of Gore Creek. The interior space was beautifully designed with custom Bavarian furniture and cozy gas fireplaces in the living room.
The large bathrooms with heated floors felt heavenly on chilly mornings. The deep soaking tub was perfect for relaxing sore muscles, and the double sinks made getting ready in the morning a breeze. Every detail in the guest rooms, from the plush towels to the soothing lighting, was designed with comfort in mind.
Mini-fridge was perfect for storing snacks and drinks, and the safe provided peace of mind for my valuables. The flat-screen TV, discreetly tucked into the wooden entertainment center, was a nice touch, though I was more captivated by the views outside my window.

Sonnenalp Kids Club
Traveling with kids? The Sonnenalp Kids Club is a fantastic amenity that sets this hotel apart. Under the guest activities coordinator, they’ll enjoy arts and crafts, games, music, and even dinner and movie nights.
Exceptional Dining And Drinking
Dining at each of the resort’s four award-winning restaurants was among the best culinary experiences I ever had. Whether you’re in the mood for hearty Bavarian dishes or something more refined, there is a place here to satisfy your cravings.
King’s Club
One of the best spots to unwind after a day on the slopes is the King’s Club. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a live music setting and a glass of specialty drink, wine, or a German beer in your hand. I particularly loved their Signature Truffle Tots—crispy, flavorful, and addictive. The Bavarian Pretzels and All-American Cheeseburgers were hits, especially if you crave classics.
Bully Ranch
For the most casual dining option, the Bully Ranch was my go-to. The menu features German-American pub fare, from burgers to fish tacos. I highly recommend trying the Buffalo Short Rib Ragu. It’s rich, savory, and perfect for warming up on a cool evening. And if you’re visiting in the summer, don’t miss the chance to dine on their beautiful patio, where you can enjoy your meal in the fresh mountain air.
Swiss Chalet
The Swiss Chalet was another highlight for me. The restaurant stays true to its theme with hand-carved wooden chairs, tables, and wood-paneled ceilings and walls. It’s the only fondue place in town, and it does not disappoint. The Schnitzel was delicious, and the fondues were decadent and flavorful. This authentic taste of the Alps transported me straight to Switzerland.
Ludwig’s Breakfast
If I had to choose one among these four, it would be Ludwig’s. This restaurant offers an expansive breakfast buffet each morning in a stunning glass sunroom that lets in plenty of natural light. In the summer, the outdoor pool becomes a gathering spot for families, surrounded by blooming flowers. And no matter the season, the oversized fireplace in the spa area is a popular place to relax in the evenings. Ludwig’s is a place to start and end your day in comfort and style.

Sonnenalp Vail Review: Final Thoughts
Whether savoring a leisurely breakfast at Ludwig’s, unwinding in the luxurious spa after a day of exploring, or simply sitting by the fireplace in the King’s Club, every experience at this Alpine-style lodge was luxurious and deeply personal. The attention to detail that radiates European charm from every corner, the impeccable room service, and the highly cooperative hotel staff made me feel like I was staying in a home away from home. The view, however, was much more stunning than what one would find at home.
