Sustainability at JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar an Eco-Friendly Hotel

There are a lot of all-inclusive resorts you can stay at in Mexico, but with so many choices, things like focusing on sustainability really makes one stand out. If you’re looking for an eco-friendly resort, JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar is a perfect example of how luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Everyday I saw the way that a hotel that prioritizes sustainability operates differently and for the better of the world during my stay at JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar, and it left me impressed.

Iberostar’s sustainability efforts are indeed something that needs to be appreciated, because more resorts should be doing this!

Sustainability at JOIA and Iberostar Playa Paraíso

Using Reusable and Recyclable Materials

One of the first things I noticed at JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar was the absence of plastic. Instead of single-use plastic bottles or cups, the resort provides reusable alternatives like refillable water jugs and durable glassware, encouraging guests to stay hydrated without creating waste. It may sound like a small change, but it makes a huge impact and compared to what I’d seen at other resorts I’ve stayed at, those plastic bottles add up fast!

Beyond the glassware, Iberostar takes a circular economy approach, meaning materials are reused, repurposed, or recycled whenever possible. From eco-friendly packaging to responsibly sourced decor, every detail reflects a commitment to sustainability without sacrificing the luxury experience.

Working Towards Clean and Eco-Friendly Beaches

Iberostar is dedicated to preserving natural surroundings and restoring ecosystems. During my stay, I learned about their impressive efforts to protect marine life, from safeguarding coral reefs in the Caribbean to preserving Posidonia seagrass in the Mediterranean.

A standout initiative is Iberostar’s Coastal Health Research and Dissemination lab, which includes a coral nursery at Iberostar Selection Bávaro. Here, they study coral’s adaptation to climate change and have developed a genetic bank to protect unique coral species. At Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, their underwater nursery is helping restore the reef, with recent reports showing positive recovery after being affected by global warming.

Guests can even dive to witness these efforts firsthand.

Iberostar’s commitment to marine conservation is inspiring, offering guests not only beautiful beaches but also the chance to learn about the vital role of coral reefs in ocean health.

Sourcing Sustainably Caught Local Seafood

I always look forward to fresh seafood on a beach getaway, and at JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar, every bite comes with a sustainability story. They take pride in sourcing only responsibly caught local seafood, ensuring that the fish and shellfish served at their hotels are both delicious and ethically sourced.

Display of fresh seafood

Iberostar is leading the charge in responsible seafood consumption, being the first hotel chain in the south of Europe, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico to receive MSC and ASC certification for sustainable seafood. By supporting local fisheries and ensuring they adhere to the highest standards, Iberostar helps maintain healthy oceans, supports fishing communities, and guarantees a more sustainable future for seafood lovers everywhere.

Their goal is to have 100% of the seafood they serve come from responsible sources by 2025—an ambitious mission that’s already a reality in their hotels in Mexico.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Iberostar is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The company focuses on energy efficiency and transitioning to cleaner energy. Through ambitious goals, they are investing in renewable energy, including photovoltaic plants, and adopting energy-efficient technologies across all resorts. Projects that support coastal and ecosystem health will actively offset any remaining emissions.

Mangrove Conservation Efforts

By planting over 16,000 mangroves on their properties, they help combat beach erosion, protect biodiversity, and absorb CO2. These remarkable trees not only shield against storms and hurricanes but also regenerate the environment and support marine life. As part of their green zone regeneration plan, Iberostar is fostering awareness about the importance of mangroves in maintaining a healthy planet and encouraging sustainable tourism practices.

Protecting Sea Turtles

Iberostar goes above and beyond to protect native sea turtles and their nesting habitats. During turtle season, they ensure the beach is clear for the turtles by relocating beach chairs and preserving their nesting areas.

Dune Recovery at Iberostar

Their commitment to preserving coastal ecosystems extends to dune recovery, where the hotel chain works to restore vital dune ecosystems, providing protection for both wildlife and the beaches. Iberostar’s efforts include planting 10,000 native plant species and collaborating with local communities and government agencies to further protect these precious environments.
