Time Travel at the Old Jail Museum

A museum might not be a fun idea, but if it has a fascinating history linked to it that dates all the way back to the 1800s, it definitely is. Built in 1887, this historic limestone jail was the county’s main jail for a century. Inside, you’ll find the original four jail cells and get a sense of what life was like for the early sheriffs and their families who lived on-site. After its closure in 1987, the old jail was used as office space for county employees and for storage. It remained in this state until 2012.

Recently, the dedicated team at Friends of the Kendall County Historic Jail (FKCHJ) has worked tirelessly to restore the space. They have transformed it into a captivating museum that showcases Kendall County’s rich history. Explore permanent collections such as the Booking/Evidence Room, Sheriffs of Kendall County/Emergency Responders, and Texas Rangers – Battle of Walkers Creek. Additional exhibits include the San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railway and more.
