Tensing Pen Resort Review: Staying on Negril’s Cliffs in Jamaica

The amount of times I kept calling this place Pensing Ten and then questioning my intelligence, because what even is a “Tensing Pen”??

Tensing Pen is a boutique cliffside resort in Negril's West End. It started out as a 1970s hippie hangout named after a stray dog, Tensing, who was found “penned” up. The fact that decades later, even with new management, the resort is home to three Rhodesian Ridgebacks feels appropriate.

With only 24 accommodations across the six-acre property, many tucked away behind dense greenery, it’s easy to forget that you don’t have the resort all to yourself.

Tensing Pen has been recognized by Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, U.S. News & World Report, and Tripadvisor.

Tensing Pen is different. It’s not something I can even write in a paragraph, which is why I leave you with a whole blog post that still feels like an undersell to how truly magical this place is.

Before visiting Negril, I assumed staying on Seven Mile Beach was what I wanted, but after staying at Tensing Pen, I’m glad I tried something different.

I’ll never tire of crystal clear waters like what we found at Seven Mile. Yet, the cliffs offer something less common. You get deeper blue water only a jump or a ladder climb away. The beach is always nearby and easy to access, but I enjoyed the rare opportunity to walk out my door, jump from their famous bridge, get help from the lifeguard to take the paddleboard in the water, and snorkel by the coves.

Apart from the other guests and staff, it’s just you and the resort. Truthfully, while I love the sand, I hate when it clings to my feet as I’m walking back to my room anyways, so the sand free was a win.

Everywhere I looked, there were flowers, palms, and dense greenery creating little hidden nooks of privacy. Half the fun was wandering the property to see what I'd discover next. The farther you walk through the property, the more dramatic the setting becomes. Garden paths open up to rocky outcroppings and little pockets of water peeking through. Waves become your gentle wakeup call, your midday playlist, and your sleepy lullaby.

Tensing Pen is made up of cottages, houses, and treehouses, so every accommodation is different.

We stayed at Cottage One where we had views of the iconic suspension bridge also known as my coveted jumping spot.

Inside, there was a beautiful four-poster bed, stone walls, local artwork, and a mini-fridge. I thought as a one-bedroom it would be cramped, but because of the closet, drawers, and bathroom area all my luggage could live in one area while our bedroom area stayed mess free.

It was only after needing to clean up from jumping and taking a shower that I realized how useful it was to have a bathroom with entrances from both the bedroom and the outside area. Finally, no tracking water through our main space!

While finding my peace on the paddleboard, I tried to commit every shade of deep blue-green and vibrant teal to memory because of how captivating and intense each hue was. Despite being deep, the water was transparent and perfect for swimming, although not quite as calm as the beach.

Paddleboarding: The lifeguard would help carry the board down all the stairs so I could focus on the enjoyable part. During one paddle, I even spotted a sea turtle. The board provided a different perspective of the cliffs, and for long stretches, it felt like I had the ocean to myself.

Snorkeling: The resort offers guided snorkeling around the coves. We saw tropical fish, stingrays, an eagle ray, pufferfish, blue tangs, and more. Since our guide was an experienced freediver, he could dive down deep and point out specific creatures to us.

Bridge Jumping: The bridge jump at Tensing Pen is roughly 18 feet high. It’s stunning, but also elicits fear even from just walking across it. As I get older, I try to do things that scare me. I gotta say I’m pretty proud of jumping no matter how much my heart screamed inside my chest.

I'm glad I started there because later in the trip I visited Rick's Cafe, where the jumps are even higher.

The Pool: The pool is an option when you don’t want to keep yourself afloat in the waves, but still want to stare at the waves crashing around just feet away. Even the closest pools to the beaches in Negril are still much further away from the views of the sea.

You can enjoy all your meals at their open-air restaurant, The Lodge, while taking in the ocean views. For this reason, I would wake up around sunrise and head to the restaurant for 24/7 coffee and stare at the waves, trying to calculate which ones rose the highest after hitting the cove.

The free continental breakfast covers the standard bases (fruit, pastries, and Jamaican coffee), but it's worth paying a little extra to order off the hot menu. They have classic staples like omelets and waffles, but if you want an authentic Jamaican breakfast, go for the ackee and saltfish.

The dinner menu leans heavily into local dishes, including seafood staples like snapper rundown and escoveitch, alongside plenty of vegetarian-friendly options like Ital Rasta stew. We ended up ordering the Oxtail Stew and Rasta Pasta, but I gravitated towards the vibrant green callaloo fritters.

When the owner told us that Tensing Pen was known to have healing properties, I was curious to understand how those properties would manifest for me. I’m already a better version of myself when I can touch water. Still, there was something I can’t fully describe that came from the wild beauty of the waves crashing against the cliffs and the little nooks of privacy created by the tropical plants while wandering the property mixed with the abundance of healing-focused activities.

Open-air sea-view massages sound great until you’re halfway through and sweating off all those oils. However, their massage huts had so much breeze from the fans and natural wind that I got to enjoy the sound of the waves without the salt of my sweat. Beyond massages, the spa also offers facials, body scrubs, nail services, and in-room treatments.

Beyond swimming, snorkeling, and cliff jumping, Tensing Pen offers a variety of activities throughout the week. The schedule and pricing can change, so check the current resort activities during your stay.

Even if you don't sign up for organized activities, the property is practically meant for spending hours exploring and laying on a hammock by the water. There are so many non-scheduled activities that allow you to build your own itinerary in the moment. Or just spend all day reading a book by the sea (I recommend the sun chairs right in front of the most dramatic waves).

So as a couple who loves adventure, wellness, and nature, it’s a pretty solid yes.

After staying at hundreds of properties, maybe even well over a thousand or two at this point, Tensing Pen offers a unique location, a wellness/adventure combo, and a natural luxury that I haven’t experienced anywhere else.
