During our three weeks in Ireland, we wanted to make sure we spent a good amount of time enjoying the beauty of Northern Ireland. Despite being on the same island, it’s amazing just how different it can be. We went there to see the sets where fantasy films and shows Game of Thrones and Dungeons & Dragons were filmed and were not disappointed.
Even if you haven’t seen Game of Thrones, Northern Ireland offers so much. In fact, by the time we went, I had only seen the first season of Game of Thrones. However, every spot we visited (including the studio tour) was fascinating, whether or not you had seen the show!
The landscape is breathtaking, the people are kind, and the towns are beyond picturesque. Of course, you might just decide, after visiting, that you do, in fact, need to watch Game of Thrones.
I created our itinerary in a way that could be somewhat flexible. We wish we had more time in Northern Ireland, and we also know not everyone is going.
Day 1: GOT Studio, Tollymore Forest & Glamping
Game of Thrones Studio Tour
At the Game of Thrones Studio Tour at Linen Mill Studios, you can step into the world of Westeros with intricately crafted sets and witness the behind-the-scenes magic that brought this epic fantasy series to life. From the iconic Iron Throne to the elaborate costumes and props, every detail showcases the immense effort and creativity that went into creating the Game of Thrones universe. Even if you haven’t seen the show, you’re likely to be amazed at just how much effort was put into the production, and it’s fascinating to see so much behind the scenes.
Another cool experience here is the Game of Thrones tea, where you can feast like a Stark with a mixture of sweet and savory delights inspired by the show!
Tollymore Forest Park
Another popular filming location of Game of Thrones and Dungeons & Dragons was Tollymore Forest Park. As soon as you pass through the gate, it does feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale realm!
There are so many enchanting spots like Foley’s Bridge, the Hermitage, and the little spots where the river runs through.
The park is actually decently spread out, and if you don’t want to spend all day walking from one point to the next, the best way to get around is by bike. We ended up booking a tour with Bike Mourne, and it was one of the best options. We saved so much time by having the bikes and got so many interesting facts from our tour guide! Luckily, the bikes are electric, so you’re not breaking a sweat while doing this either!

Enniskeen Estate Lodge
After an amazing tour, relaxing at Enniskeen Estate Lodge is just what’s needed! The cabin itself was so cozy and tucked away in nature. Our cabin, the Kingfishers Residence, was right by the river just behind an apple orchard!
The wood-fired hot tub was so enchanting. We spent our morning keeping warm in the water while looking out at the river. Thanks to the apple orchard, we also had the pleasure of seeing deer right in front of us!
If you want more time here or don’t have time to stay the night, check out some of their experiences like the Forest Spa, Twilight S’mores, Electric Picnic, and more!

Day 2: Castle Ward, Bread Making, and Belfast
Castle Ward
It’s so hard not to preface this every time, but even if you haven’t seen Game of Thrones, this tour is just amazing. There is something so fun about donning a thick cape and swishing it around as you galavant through the grounds!
We loved getting to sit on the Iron Throne, practice our archery skills, and then walk through the grounds to see all the filming locations. It felt so regal, and our guide was a storyteller in his own right!
Inch Abbey
This breathtaking medieval monastery, steeped in history, is also another location for Game of Thrones (Season 1, Episode 10). As you wander through the ruins of this Cistercian abbey, you’ll be transported back in time, surrounded by the remnants of its grandeur and tranquility.
Make Soda Bread at Tracey’s Farmhouse Kitchen
Nothing I type will truly express how wonderful an experience the soda bread-making class at Tracey’s is. The moment we arrived in Northern Ireland, every time someone learned we were going to visit Tracey’s, they would rave about her—and that’s still an understatement.
We’re all about experiences that bring you into the local culture, and I love that this workshop was actually in Tracey’s home. You start off with a meal of fresh ingredients and bread as she teaches you the steps of soda bread making. Then you get to try it for yourself! It’s so easy, and I love how Tracey teaches it so you can then go home and do it yourself!
For me, what stood out was how endearing Tracey is. Everyone in Northern Ireland is so kind already, so for Tracey to stand out on top of that is a testament to what a person she is!
Check Into Belfast: Harrison Chambers of Distinction
With tummies full, it’s the perfect time to make your way for a restful evening in Belfast!
We chose to stay at the Harrison Chambers of Distinction because it was a hotel with so much character! Each room is eclectic, with many of them being inspired by different literary figures like the Brontë Room and the C.S. Lewis Room. I was also so happy to learn that this hotel was woman-owned!
The whole place stands out in multiple ways, but there’s one thing in particular that still has us talking. If you get the chance to stay here, you will undoubtedly meet William. I have traveled many places and experienced incredible service, yet no one has stood out like William. The way he anticipates your needs or wants before you even know them yourself, and the level of care and thoughtfulness, will make you feel like royalty. Like Tracey, it’s one of those things that words can’t adequately describe.

Day 3 & 4: Belfast
You could stay in Belfast for as long or as short as you want, but we recommend at least two days. I’ve shared some of my must-visit spots and experiences in Belfast.
Belfast Walking Tour
Northern Ireland is rich, complex, and full of stories! On your own, you can only get a surface-level appreciation of all there is. That’s why I love the opportunity to do a walking tour with Belfast Walking Tours. It’s a private group tour, meaning it’s just your group, and it allows your guide to cater the tour to your interests! I loved the opportunity to ask questions and learn exactly what I wanted!
St. George’s Market
No visit to Belfast is complete without immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of St. George’s Market. Located in the heart of the city, this historic market is a treasure trove of local produce, artisanal crafts, and mouthwatering food stalls. It’s simultaneously a foodie wonderland and the perfect place to shop for souvenirs, where you’ll find so many local goods, products, and art!
Titanic Museum
Here, you can learn the story of the ill-fated RMS Titanic, from its construction in Belfast’s shipyards to its tragic sinking in 1912. As you walk through the museum’s immersive exhibits, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the ship’s luxurious interiors, the lives of its passengers and crew, and the events surrounding its fateful voyage.
Sensorium
There are a lot of cocktail experiences around the world, but Sensorium stands out as an opportunity to stretch your sensory abilities. You’ll have all your senses tested beyond what you probably have before and leave having acquired some new sensorial skills—all while enjoying multiple delicious cocktails!

Spend the Night at Barbican Gate Lodge

This charming accommodation offers a truly unforgettable experience, allowing you to reside within the walls of a historic fortress. With its unique architectural features and medieval ambiance, the lodge provides a one-of-a-kind setting for an overnight stay.
But there’s more to Barbican Gate Lodge than its intriguing past. Did you know that the lodge has also played a role in popular culture?
