History of Hot Springs Arkansas
Hot Springs has a fascinating history that dates back centuries. Initially revered by Native Americans for its healing waters, the area was considered a sacred site where they would gather for rituals and medicinal purposes. The natural springs were believed to possess curative properties, drawing people from various tribes to partake in their restorative powers.
In the early 19th century, European settlers discovered the springs and began to develop the hot springs area, constructing bathhouses and promoting the waters as a health cure. By the early 20th century, Hot Springs had become a luxurious playground for the elite, attracting wealthy visitors seeking relaxation and recreation.
Famous figures such as Al Capone, the notorious gangster, and Babe Ruth, the legendary baseball player, were known to frequent the town. Al Capone would often rent out an entire floor of the Arlington Hotel, and Babe Ruth was a regular at the local racetracks and bathhouses. Their presence and that of other celebrities and dignitaries added to the town’s allure and reputation as a glamorous destination.
Today, Hot Springs retains its historic charm while offering modern amenities that cater to contemporary travelers. Visitors can still enjoy the historic bathhouses, many of which have been preserved and restored, as well as a variety of modern spas and wellness centers. The town also boasts an array of attractions, including the Hot Springs National Park, the historic downtown area with its shops and restaurants, and numerous cultural and recreational activities.
Hot Springs seamlessly blends its rich history with contemporary appeal, making it a unique destination for travelers from all walks of life.
Romantic Things to Do in Hot Springs, Arkansas for Couples
What I love about Hot Springs, Arkansas, is that it’s a timeless classic that seems to be loved by all ages. I would recommend a young couple visiting Hot Springs just as much as I would recommend my grandparents staying here. It’s quaint, tucked in so much nature, and has so much interesting history.
Dive in the Thermal Waters of Hot Springs
The primary attraction of Hot Springs, which has been a hotspot of enjoyment for countless visitors, is none other than its natural hot springs. Immersing yourself in these restorative thermal waters is romantic for couples seeking relaxation and intimacy.
Explore the Bathhouse Row
A visit to Hot Springs would be incomplete without strolling down the Historic Bathhouse Row, a collection of eight 19th and early 20th-century bathhouses. It makes for such a beautiful scene, unlike any other. Each building has its unique story and current function:
Fordyce Bathhouse
Now a museum and Hot Springs National Park’s visitor center, the historic Fordyce Bathhouse offers a glimpse into the opulent bathing experiences of the past. It’s fun to see how these luxurious experiences are not quite the luxury we would expect (and sometimes look somewhat terrifying).
There is also a detailed history of the area covering how Hot Springs became the go-to destination at the time, prominent historical figures, and the racist segregation that prevented many Black people from enjoying the bathhouses.
Quapaw Baths & Spa
Couples can indulge in modern spa treatments while soaking in the thermal waters. This is the more popular bath house since it offers a more modern design, featuring a staff of skilled professionals, organic products, and several pools from the hot springs water at different temperatures.
You and your loved one can indulge in a private couples bath in your dedicated bathing area. As an added charm of Quapaw Baths & Spa, visit a cozy cave built around naturally flowing 143° water and soak in the radiant heat. This intimate space enhances your Quapaw experience and provides a healthy, relaxing environment.
Buckstaff Bathhouse
Buckstaff Bathhouse is the only bathhouse that has operated continuously since its opening. It offers traditional mineral-rich thermal water treatments similar to those displayed at the Fordyce Bathhouse.
Superior Bathhouse Brewery
The first brewery to be located inside a U.S. National Park and the only one in the world to use thermal spring water as its main ingredient. Superior Bathhouse Brewery offers a unique experience where visitors can enjoy craft beers brewed on-site while appreciating the historic ambiance of a bathhouse.
The brewery features a variety of beers, from IPAs to stouts, all crafted with the mineral-rich waters of Hot Springs. Guests can participate in tastings, dine in the restaurant, or relax with a pint while taking in the charm of this unique establishment.
Hike in the Hot Springs National Park
One of the biggest draws to Hot Springs is Hot Springs National Park, perfectly perched in the heart of downtown. Established in 1921, this park is unique, encompassing natural landscapes and historic bathhouses. Couples can explore the park’s numerous hiking trails, which offer stunning views of the Ouachita Mountains, and enjoy a romantic stroll through the park to witness the natural beauty up close. Fun fact: It’s free to enter Hot Springs National Park, making it an excellent budget-friendly option for couples to share some quality time together.
While there are hot springs you can see in the park, there are no natural swimming spots to soak in the springs. However, there are several bathhouses where you can enjoy thermal mineral water!

Venture on a Kayaking Adventure on Lake Ouachita
Kayaking is another fantastic option for exploring the depths of Lake Ouachita. We saw several couples paddling together, gliding smoothly across the water. You can even book a pontoon or motorboat and float over the serene waters of Lake Ouachita. There’s something incredibly freeing about being out on open water, away from the city buzz.
Saddle Up for Horseback Riding
Hot Springs, Arkansas, offers many delightful activities for couples, but horseback riding through the Ouachita National Forest is a standout experience. There’s something magical about exploring nature on horseback, side-by-side with your loved one.
We arrived at the stables, greeted by friendly staff. After a brief introduction and instructions, we were saddled up for our journey. As we made our way into the forest, the pine trees towered above us while the trail meandered through some of the most picturesque landscapes I’ve ever seen.
Catch a Glimpse of Prohibition Era at Gangster Museum of America
If you haven’t had a chance to be at the Mob Museum of Las Vegas, you can have a glimpse of the Mob history of America here at the hot springs. The Gangster Museum of America in Hot Springs, Arkansas, delves into the mysterious history of notorious gangsters who once frequented the area. This unique museum offers an in-depth look at the lives of infamous figures like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel, and Frank Costello, who were regular visitors to this once-thriving hot spot. You’ll find meticulously detailed exhibits here, including personal artifacts, rare photographs, and original newspaper clippings.
One of the museum’s standout features is the collection of authentic slot machines from the 1920s and 1930s. These machines offer a glimpse into the underground gambling scene that was prevalent in Hot Springs. Take a drive past Capone’s former apartment where he ran his mob operations, and check out the East Bathhouse, once home to an underground casino. Interactive displays, such as the recreated “outfit” office and a speakeasy, provide a captivating insight into the gangster era and allow visitors to experience the ambiance of the time.
A little-known fact is that Hot Springs was considered neutral territory among rival gangs. This made it a popular retreat for gangsters looking to relax and evade law enforcement. The museum also covers Hot Springs’s role as a haven for illegal activities during Prohibition, with hidden tunnels and secret rooms used to conduct illicit business.
Spend a Romantic Evening at Ohio Club
The Ohio Club, the oldest bar in Arkansas, boasts a rich history from 1905. Originally a popular hangout for gangsters and celebrities, this storied establishment has transformed over the years while maintaining its historic charm. Today, visitors can enjoy live music that creates a lively and romantic atmosphere for couples to spend a romantic evening. The vintage decor transports guests back in time as they sip on expertly crafted cocktails. This offers a unique blend of history and modern enjoyment.
Hop On Hot Springs Trolley Tours
After the gloomy visits to the Gangster Museum of America and Ohio Club, we needed something light-hearted and entertaining, and Hot Springs Trolley Tours came to our rescue. We boarded the 1920s-style trolley in downtown Hot Springs and ventured to discover this fascinating town’s rich history and vibrant culture.
The tour took us through the historic district, where elegant bathhouses and historic old buildings lined the streets. Our guide shared captivating stories, from its early days as a healing destination to its golden era. During that time, figures like Al Capone and Babe Ruth roamed the streets. We were particularly intrigued by the tales of European royalty and Hollywood stars flocking to these baths in the 1930s, seeking the acclaimed healing waters.
Admire the Natural Wonders of Garvan Woodland Gardens
Garvan Woodland Gardens is a picturesque botanical garden for nature-loving couples. It sprawls across 210 acres of breathtaking landscapes and stunning views of Lake Hamilton. Spring is the best time to visit when you get to see abundant flowers, but no matter when you visit, Garvan Gardens is a sight to behold.
They really make this a spot out in nature. I loved the garden’s paved trails, but then there were other rocky paths wandering through the trees, getting up close to waterfalls, and getting a sense of adventure! Make sure also to buy tickets online ahead of time to save money.
Have a Picnic at the Japanese Garden
Couples can immerse themselves in the tranquil Japanese Garden, North America’s 5th best Japanese Garden. This garden features koi ponds teeming with vibrant fish and beautifully arched bridges that provide perfect photo opportunities. The meticulously maintained scenery reflects traditional Japanese horticultural practices.
Witness the Stunning Beauty of Anthony Chapel
The stunning Anthony Chapel is another highlight of Garvan Woodland Gardens. With its soaring glass architecture, this chapel allows natural light to flood in, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Anthony Chapel offers seating for up to 200 people and is renowned for its remarkable acoustics, making it a favorite among musicians. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles, the chapel’s design enhances its connection to the surrounding forest.
Live in a Treehouse
The whimsical Treehouse is a must-visit for those looking to indulge their sense of adventure. Designed by renowned architect Jane Smith, this unique structure is nestled among the treetops and is crafted to delight children and adults alike. If you and your partner are staying in one of the cozy cabins or treehouses, you can elevate your romantic escape with in-room massages.
Professional massage therapists will come to your accommodation. This service allows you to enjoy the most relaxing and intimate moments without venturing outside. Additionally, it offers a bird’s-eye view of the gardens and provides interactive exhibits that educate visitors about the local flora and fauna. The Treehouse is a playful space and an educational resource, making it a family favorite.
Discover a Truly Magical Fairy Garden
The Fairy Gardens add a touch of enchantment to the gardens. This area is dotted with miniature houses, each designed to look like a fairy could move in at any moment. It’s a great place that sparks the imagination, with winding paths and hidden nooks that invite exploration. The Fairy Gardens is perfect for children to engage in imaginative play and for adults to rediscover a sense of wonder.
Catch a Fish or two at Lake Catherine State Park
About 40 minutes southeast of Hot Springs, Lake Catherine State Park offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all interests and ages and is totally worth this short drive! Boating and fishing are popular pastimes on the serene waters of Lake Catherine. Fishers can try their luck for bass, crappie, and catfast. I was also excited to learn that state parks are free in Arkansas!
For those looking to relax, the park’s swimming beach is an inviting spot to cool off during the warmer months. Families can take advantage of the picnic area, which is perfect for a leisurely lunch while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. A convenient launch ramp, a gorgeous pavilion, fun playgrounds, and a well-marked trail are some other highlights of the park.
The park also provides cabin rentals equipped with modern amenities and campsites where couples can fully immerse themselves in nature. Rangers often host interpretive programs, offering an educational glimpse into the local wildlife and natural history. These programs add to the enriching experience at Lake Catherine State Park.
The highlight for us, though, was the scenic hiking on Falls Branch Trail, which leads to a picturesque waterfall. This easy hike is only 10 minutes and leads to a stunning site. The water falls into a deep blue pool up to your waist at the center. It then gets shallower further back and turns crystal clear with all the rocks around.
Even in the summer months, the water is cold! It’s a small area that can get packed. However, if you arrive early, you will be met with some stunning sites.
Go Glamping at Starlight Haven
Experience the perfect blend of luxury and nature at Starlight Haven, where glamping meets elegance. This premier destination offers an array of unique accommodations designed to suit every taste.
Choose from beautifully furnished safari tents, charming yurts, or cozy hot springs treehouses. Each option provides comfort and style amidst the great outdoors. They all come with your private hot tubs with the scenic overlooks of the river!
What I really love about Starlight Haven is that you’re only 10 minutes from the town of Hot Springs. With all the tall pine trees away, you feel like you are miles away from civilization, tucked away in a nature oasis.
Starlight Haven also boasts an impressive range of amenities to enhance your glamping experience. For example, if you decide to have a group trip to Starlight Haven, you can enjoy access to a communal lounge area perfect for relaxing with some games or meetings.
There is a small outdoor area for frisbee golf, a tree swing, and a peaceful creek nearby. Best of all, Starlight Haven is pet-friendly, welcoming your furry companions to join the adventure.
