How We Explored The Woodlands

We spent a few days climbing through suspended obstacle courses, taking a swan boat down the Waterway, shopping Market Street, eating our way through Town Center and walking from our hotel to a performance.

Texas TreeVentures is a three-level aerial adventure course with nearly 100 challenges. You can make your way across swinging tires and suspended planks, ride the ziplines, climb through obstacles and even cross part of the course in a kayak hanging in the air. I thought the suspended kayaks were especially funny.

I liked that TreeVentures does not lock you into one long course. There are different levels and routes, so you can choose the obstacles you want to try, repeat a favorite or stop when you are ready. You can even go inside for an air-conditioned break and return to the course during your session, which makes it easy to stay for as little or as long as you want.

Riva Row Boat House rents kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and swan pedal boats from the lower Waterway. We took out a swan boat and pedaled past birds, ducks and people launching their own boats. I spent a lot of time trying to spot every dog along the banks, which was basically an activity of its own.

You can also join a SUP Yoga class at Riva Row. It combines stand-up paddleboarding and yoga, and beginners do not need previous experience with either one. The class is $40, and you can check the current schedule and reserve your spot online.

Spend Time at Market Street

What I like about Market Street is that it gives you luxury shopping without having to go into a major city where you are fighting crowds and traffic. You have brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Rolex alongside J.Crew, Nike, Kendra Scott and LoveShackFancy. Even the storefronts add to the experience, from Gucci’s deep green exterior to Sephora’s black-and-white look and the full pink, girly vibe of LoveShackFancy.

But there is more than shopping here. The central green becomes a community space, with music, people hanging out on blankets, kids kicking soccer balls and a splash pad for children. As we walked to dinner or somewhere else in the district, we would almost always see something happening.

Texas weather can go from sunny skies to pouring rain with almost no notice. Market Street had complimentary umbrellas available for visitors, and small details like this show the level of luxury.

The Pavilion and Waterway

Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is an outdoor performing arts center that brings major concerts and free community programming to The Woodlands. Frank Sinatra, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Dave Matthews Band, Alabama and Clint Black are among the artists who have performed here. The venue also hosts the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and other performing-arts events.

The Pavilion can bring in a huge concert one night and offer a free family performance another. Ticket sales from the major rock, pop, rap and country shows help fund free performances, arts education, grants and scholarships. You can plan your trip around a major concert or one of the free community programs.

We went for a free Lilo & Stitch performance with dancers from Hawaii, children’s crafts, dog adoptions, a photo wall and themed food, including a coconut drink. Since we were staying at Hyatt Centric in Market Street, we walked straight to the Pavilion and back without dealing with parking.

Explore The Woodlands Waterway

Trees line the Waterway even though you are right in the middle of Town Center. On a weekend morning, the paths were already busy with runners, dog walkers and families. People brought their own canoes to the water, and we kept spotting birds and ducks along the banks.

We could follow the Waterway to Waterway Square, Market Street and The Woodlands Mall, so the walk became part of getting from one stop to the next. Along the way, we passed the fountains at Waterway Square and public art along the paths. When we did not want to walk the whole route, the free Town Center Trolley stops around the Waterway, Market Street, The Woodlands Mall and Hughes Landing. That trolley gets much more appealing once the Texas heat starts hitting.

At Hughes Landing, we walked along the boardwalk beside Lake Woodlands and passed public art, shops and Restaurant Row. You can also catch a seasonal Rock the Row performance or grab a patio table for sunset.

Lake’s Edge Boat House is also here for kayak and paddleboard rentals right from Lake Woodlands.

Browse The Woodlands Mall

By now, you can probably tell that The Woodlands takes shopping seriously. Market Street covers the luxury boutiques and outdoor shopping, while The Woodlands Mall has two full levels to explore indoors.

Along with two levels of shops and restaurants, the mall has a second-floor carousel, kiddie rides and a children’s play area. There is also patio dining outside, so you can still enjoy the Waterway area once the weather cooperates.

Look for Public Art

The amount of public art around The Woodlands really surprised me. We kept spotting it everywhere we walked: a small bronze sculpture almost hidden in the grass, mosaics under the Waterway bridges, art benches along the path and the huge red sculpture at Hughes Landing.

I think it’s really cool to see a community invest this much in art. The artists get their work in front of people, while everyone else gets to enjoy it as they’re walking to dinner, shopping or exploring the Waterway. Once I realized how much art was around us, I kept looking to see what we would find next.

iFLY Houston Woodlands lets you fly inside a vertical wind tunnel without jumping out of a plane. First-time packages include the flight gear and one-on-one instruction, so you are not walking into the tunnel and trying to figure it out on your own.

Look for Candlelight Concerts and Mystery Experiences

The Woodlands has Candlelight concerts at The Peach Orchard, where musicians perform tributes surrounded by rows of candles. The program changes, with current concerts ranging from Vivaldi and Hans Zimmer to Fleetwood Mac and Coldplay versus Imagine Dragons.

Where to Eat in The Woodlands

The food in The Woodlands covered everything from fine-dining Indian dishes and colorful cocktails to a trompito dinner, plant-based café food and an over-the-top brunch with a massive cinnamon roll.

Bosscat goes big with brunch. The cinnamon roll has a croissant-like texture, arrives with frosting poured over it and uses sour cream for a slight tang under all that cinnamon. The French toast came covered in blueberries with salty butter to cut the sweetness, while the short-rib chilaquiles gave us a savory break. Even the burger, which looked like the simplest order, had enough flavor without being covered in sauce.

Stay at Hyatt Centric The Woodlands

We chose Hyatt Centric because we could walk out of the hotel and be right at Market Street, dinner or the Pavilion. After a huge meal, we carried our leftovers back to the room, took a break and headed out again without moving the car.

We stayed in the Market Street Patio Suite with an accessible shower. One of the highlights for me was sitting on the balcony with my coffee and watching Market Street wake up below us. One morning, a car show filled the street, and I watched the whole thing from up there. Once we went downstairs, we had three different coffee shops, plus restaurants and stores, within a short walk.

The hotel itself is beautiful, from the huge chandelier in the lobby to the second-floor pool terrace. The pool has a shape I have not really seen anywhere else. It almost looks like a pair of glasses, with the hot tub set into the middle. At night, the water glows blue across the terrace, with lounge seating and a fire pit overlooking Market Street.

Stay or Spend a Pool Day at The Woodlands Resort

The Woodlands Resort gives you two ways to use the property. You can book an overnight stay at The Woodlands Resort. If you do not want to stay overnight, you can book the pool for the day through ResortPass. The current day-pass listing includes the lazy river, waterslide, splash pad, hot tub and resort pool, so that is the one I would look at first for a full family pool day.

Closer to Town Center, The Westin has a rooftop pool, while Hyatt Centric has a second-floor infinity pool, hot tub and firepit. Some Hyatt Centric options also include a reserved lounger with champagne or an evening firepit with s’mores. The Waterway Marriott appears in the same search when passes are available, so you can compare a full resort day with a simpler place to swim and cool off.

How to Plan a First Visit

You can cover a surprising amount of Town Center without moving your car. We walked between Market Street, the Pavilion, the mall and parts of the Waterway, then used the free trolley when the distance or Texas heat started catching up with us.

TreeVentures is the main stop that requires a drive from Town Center. Give yourself enough time for the harness fitting and safety instructions before you start climbing.

The easiest pairings are:

Waterway and Riva Row: Walk the paths, get out on a kayak, paddleboard or swan boat, and eat nearby.
Market Street and the Pavilion: Shop, have dinner and walk to the Pavilion for a concert or performance.
TreeVentures and Hughes Landing: Climb at Texas TreeVentures, then slow down with a lakefront walk and dinner at Hughes Landing.

For one day, I would choose the Waterway plus Town Center. With a weekend, you can add TreeVentures, spend more time on the water and leave room for one of the meals or performances that you do not want to rush.

Final Thoughts on The Woodlands

In a few days, we climbed through TreeVentures, pedaled a swan boat along the Waterway, ate an enormous brunch, shopped Market Street and walked from our hotel to a Pavilion performance. I love a trip where I can mix outdoor adventure with good food and a little luxury, and The Woodlands made all of that easy to fit into one weekend.

I would come back with more time to follow the paths we did not get to finish and see what else we found along the way. Even after a few days, there were still pieces of art, restaurant patios and stretches of the Waterway that made me want another afternoon.
