I wish I could find the perfect words to describe Kokoro Mio Hotel Boutique, because it’s truly one of a kind. Let’s start by saying it’s a mixture of luxury and eco accommodations, with an outdoor swimming pool, a private beach area, and a breathtaking Lagoon in Xul-Ha, all right in the middle of nature. Choosing Kokoro Mio was almost a happy accident.
Initially, my travel plans revolved around staying closer to Bacalar, and this eco-luxury retreat was slightly off my radar. We nearly didn’t choose it while working on several accommodations, but we would have made a mistake if we hadn’t. This serene haven is nestled slightly farther out, but the extra drive is worth it.
The staff at Kokoro Mio makes you feel at home from the get-go. Non-stop assistance is available at the reception, where staff speak English and Spanish. Chetumal International Airport is just 19 km (almost a 21-minute drive) from the property, free private parking is available, and the hotel offers a paid airport shuttle service.
First Impressions: A Personal Experience Unlike Anywhere
Tatiana and Ricardo are a husband-and-wife duo, an engineer and an architect, who envisioned this jungle sanctuary and worked to make their dream a reality. Unlike most hotels where the founders remain behind the scenes, they are front and center, involved in every step, ensuring every guest feels welcome and cared for. I mean, it was so unreal to encounter such a deeply personal connection when traveling, and that uniqueness sets Kokoro Mio apart. They’re so passionate about this place that they are here every day. They’re involved, they are so kind, and they’re very flexible about what people want and need.

When we checked in, we were greeted by 4 gorgeous golden retrievers. These are the owners’ dogs, and they’re just the sweetest things, so if you love dogs, this is the absolute best place to be. Throughout our whole stay, they let the dogs be around us a lot, and being a dog owner myself, I found it lovely seeing how our new furry friends seemed quite familiar to us. If you’re not as excited about dogs, don’t worry, the owners are really good about making sure they don’t bother you during your stay.

For us dog lovers, it got even better. I was actually celebrating my birthday, and when they heard about it and saw how much I loved the golden retrievers, during one of the dinners, they brought out a dessert—with the dogs dressed in adorable birthday hats. It was such a heartwarming moment and it made my birthday one of the most special experiences, and I’ll always remember the kindness and thoughtfulness they showed.
Have your own pet friends? This 5-star Hotel Boutique Kokoro Mio is also pet friendly; it is adults only, though, so it’s not kid-friendly but, of course, couple-friendly.
The Environment: A Healing and Wellness Sanctuary Amidst Nature
One of the first things I noticed while strolling through the property was a lot of trees everywhere—towering, majestic, and impossible to miss. What struck me the most was that they were even standing tall right in the middle of the path, with most of them having signs saying, “Sorry, I was here first.” That single phrase spoke volumes about the hotel’s commitment to preserving nature.

Instead of cutting down trees for convenience, they designed the paths to weave around them. As the sign so beautifully pointed out, “We can walk around the tree, but the tree can’t walk around us.” This philosophy of coexistence makes Kokoro Mio feel so special.

Art is an integral part of Kokoro Mio; you feel it from the moment you arrive. It’s not just confined to one area—it’s everywhere. Paintings, sculptures, symbols, and intricate designs dot the landscape, creating a gallery-like experience in the middle of the jungle. There’s something magical about walking through lush greenery and stumbling upon a beautifully crafted piece of art or a thoughtful installation.

I particularly loved spotting little characters nestled into the hotel’s ofrendas (altars) during my stay. These details were so deeply rooted in Mexican culture, yet they felt personal and intimate, almost like a love letter to the traditions of the region.

A Culinary Journey at Kokoro Mio: Dining at MAMI CUY
Just when I thought my birthday couldn’t get any better—what with four adorable goldens in party hats wishing me a happy day—Kokoro Mio managed to top even that. This time, it was through an unforgettable culinary experience at their onsite restaurant, MAMI CUY.

Instead of a fixed list of dishes, the team creates meals inspired by your preferences, dietary needs, and maybe even your cravings. When we arrived, we were given a questionnaire to fill out—our likes, dislikes, restrictions, and even things we were curious to try. You never know what to expect, but I believe if you have something that maybe you can mention, like trying to eat healthier, or definitely any dietary restrictions, they can help.

My husband, knowing how much I adore mole, had mentioned it to the team, also considering into account that just the day before, we searched everywhere looking for tamales de mole and ponche navideño yet came up empty-handed because it was Christmas. But Tatiana, one of the owners, had a better idea.
She goes, “You know what? We will make you mole tamales.”
And then she paused…
“Do you want to learn how to make them?”
The next thing I knew, I was standing in the Kokoro Mio kitchen, apron on, learning how to make one of my favorite dishes.
So, the same night as the cute dogs in hats, we had mole enchiladas. But it wasn’t just that. It was the mole of Tatiana’s grandmother that the restaurant was named after.

At Mami Cuy, you can experience authentic Mexican cuisine through cherished grandmother’s recipes. Many of the recipes used are actually her recipes. It’s all about savoring traditional flavors that have been lovingly preserved for generations.

I don’t know all the things they have, but they also served barbacoa tacos one night and some ravioli. The menu changes daily, keeping every meal a surprise. But what makes it truly special is how the team listens to your input. If you have a specific craving or a dietary goal—say, trying something new—they’ll do their best to accommodate.
Cocktails and Coffee
They have a pool bar right in the middle of this jungle sanctuary named Gran Balaam. Imagine enjoying a handcrafted cocktail while lounging on the cozy beds or sipping on a perfectly brewed coffee while dipping your toes into the water.

What really makes Gran Balam stand out is its personal touch. While they do have a menu, they’re much more excited to create something based on what you like! Just let them know what you like and dislike and let them craft you something unique. The talented mixologists are happy to create something tailored just for you, blending your preferences with their creative flair.

Now, here’s where things get even more special. Ricardo, one of the owners, has a deep passion for coffee—and it shows. He doesn’t just love coffee; he’s deeply involved in every step of the process. Ricardo personally roasts and grinds the beans at a little coffee hut, ensuring every cup is rich, aromatic, and full of character.

You can stop in for a fresh latte, cappuccino, espresso, etc made with care. As a coffee lover myself, I was fascinated by the effort and care that went into each brew. They even make their own chocolate!

Guest Rooms, Suites and Amenities: A Luxurious Jungle Escape
It’s not every day that you get to stay in what feels like an eco-luxury treehouse, blending seamlessly with nature while still offering all the comforts of a high-end boutique hotel.
The property offers two types of accommodations: the Cabaña Suite and the Cabaña Master Suite.

We stayed at the regular one, and it was wonderful. At the bottom, you have your own secluded garden with premium seating, a hammock, a pool, and a luxurious Mayan soaking tub.

Upstairs, the suite continued to impress—a cozy, plush king-sized bed with high-quality linens made every night restful. The small patio gave us a lovely spot to sip our morning coffee and enjoy the garden views. Speaking of coffee, Ricardo’s passion for it shone through—he even provided café de roca, which was a delightful treat to start the day.

The bathroom setup was equally impressive. An open-air shower added a sense of adventure and connection to nature, while the separate bath and powder room provided the convenience and privacy you’d expect from a 5-star stay. There was also a bathtub for indulgent moments of relaxation. And yes, for those wondering, the room had modern amenities like air conditioning and free WiFi to ensure we stayed comfortable throughout our stay.

Now, if you want to truly pamper yourself in luxury, the Cabaña Master Suite is the way to go. These stunning flower-inspired suites are perched three meters above the ground and span an impressive 45 m². It’s like having your own sanctuary in the treetops. With a private plunge pool, a hammock perfect for afternoon naps, and breathtaking views of the verdant Xul-Ha jungle, this suite is designed for ultimate relaxation.

Every detail in these air-conditioned rooms reflects the passion and care of the owners, Tatiana and Ricardo. Small details like the Cafe de Olla in the room made by Ricardo just shows how they put so much thought into every detail. They’ve managed to create spaces that feel both indulgent and harmonious with the surrounding nature.

The Lagoon Club: A Private Paradise
As part of your stay, you get access to their Lagoon Club just for hotel guests.

We were lucky enough to visit on a day when no other guests had checked in, so it felt like the Lagoon Club belonged entirely to us. They whisked us away on a UTV to Xul Ha, a stunning lagoon that almost looked unreal. The water was an almost surreal blue shade—like something from a postcard. Even on busy days, you might share it with a couple of other families, but the vibe will remain exclusive.

They have kayaks that you can use complimentary. Then they can pull out the beds for you to relax while they make a couple of drinks if you want. They asked us if we wanted a snack and asked, “Do you want ceviche?” I responded, “Well, by chance, do you have Aguachile?” And, they brought us Aguachile. It was some of the best Aguachile and eating it by the lagoon was nothing short of paradise.

The Lagoon Club isn’t just about lounging and dining though—it’s also an incredible venue for special occasions. Imagine exchanging vows or celebrating a milestone event with this picturesque lagoon as your backdrop. The Kokoro Mio team extends their signature hospitality to ensure every detail is flawless, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Kokoro Mio Yoga: A Sanctuary for Mind and Body
If you can’t afford to miss morning yoga even on your getaway, there’s also a yoga studio here. You can go and use it yourself, or if you’d like, you can reach out to them. They can schedule different yoga classes for you offering a journey of healing and wellness through ancient healing traditions.

Indulge in Bliss at Kokoro Mio’s Luxury Spa
Another amenity that you can book at Kokoro Mio is the luxury spa on site. Visit one of their spa rooms and get pampered with a high-end spa experience with treatments ranging from ten mescal to full-body massage and more. Skilled massage therapists go out of their way to make things special. If you ask for a lot of things, they’re willing to provide.

Kokoro Mio Hotel Review: Final Thoughts
Kokoro Mio Hotel is a true hidden gem—though it was only just opening when we visited, I can already tell it’s destined to be one of the hottest spots in the area. Despite being in its early days, the attention to detail, warmth, and care already make it stand out. Once word gets out, this place will undoubtedly be booked solid, and it’s easy to see why.
While there are many beautiful places to stay in the area, Kokoro Mio Hotel truly shines for those who want to immerse themselves in local culture, enjoy a healing experience, and feel connected to nature. Set against the backdrop of the subtropical Mayan forest, this resort balances luxury with a unique, close-knit local touch that makes it truly one of a kind.
I could easily go on and on about this place—the hospitality, the ambiance, the animals, the stunning surroundings. Kokomo Bio Hotel offers something special that’s hard to put into words, but I’ll say this: if you love animals, authentic experiences, and a peaceful retreat, this is one of the best places I’ve ever stayed.
It might be sad knowing it will likely be packed with visitors in the future, but honestly, they deserve every bit of recognition and success. Please, do yourself a favor and stay here—you won’t regret it.
