The Best Places to Visit Texas in The Fall

Fall is a weird season in Texas. We get about one week of true fall and the rest is just Texas alternating between winter and summer, often in the same day. Seriously. In the fall I simultaneously pack my winter coat and bathing suit because I don’t know what to expect. Still there are some wonderful places to visit in Texas in the fall where the weather is perfect, the trees actually look like they’re experiencing autumn with red hues, and the activities are abundant. Keep reading to see all of the best places to Visit Texas in the fall.

Jefferson

When I think of the stereotypical fall colors, I think of Jefferson, Texas. The cypress trees over the bayou start to turn into brilliant oranges and reds for stunning views. In the cooler weather, it’s nice to relax in one of the beautiful bed and breakfasts in the beautiful bed and breakfast capital. Plus warm up with a nice glass of wine at Enoch stomp winery. There are so many things that make Jefferson one of the best places in Texas to visit in the fall.

San Saba

San Saba is famous for Gorman Falls, a 70 foot waterfall in Colorado Bend State Park. During the warmer months, the hike can be pretty exhausting under the sun, but during the fall, the weather is perfect for conquering this difficult hike. Not to mention the fall and winter months are when you can go pecan picking!

Plano

Food, a mixture of indoor activities for the cooler hours and outdoor activities for the warmer activities, and plenty of shopping to prep for the holiday season make Plano a great fall Texas destination. I loved spending midday ziplining through trees and then retreating indoors to the incredible VOID virtual reality experience when the temps dropped. Not to mention warming our bellies up with 21 different food stalls at Legacy Food Hall where they regularly host concerts and fun events in the fall.

Houston

Houston heat and humidity is no joke! That’s why Houston is a city so perfect for visiting in the fall. What’s so cool about Houston is that you can travel around the world (and beyond) without leaving the city. From all of the different cultures sharing their foods, to the local museums, Chinatown, and NASA, there’s plenty of fun activities for fall.

Big Bend

I mean is there ever really a bad time to visit Big Bend? The answer is no. Each season presents a different opportunity to explore something new in Big Bend. Fall is probably one of the best seasons for visiting Big Bend because of how beautiful the weather is. It’s the perfect time for hiking all of the different routes, enjoying the natural hot springs, and visiting Boquillas, Mexico.

El Paso

El Paso is a great place for hiking, steaks, and Mexican culture. The weather in fall is perfect for all of these. I love going through the El Paso margarita trail, or even better, crossing into Jaurez for the original margarita. One thing you can’t miss is going on a tour through the colorful copper mines!

Frisco

Fall is for football and what better place to celebrate than where the Dallas Cowboys themselves train! Check out the Ford Center at the Star, catch all different sports games. Or if you like more of the indoor games, check out the National Videogame Museum and Nerdvana- a cocktail and gaming spot. There are plenty of things to do in fall in Frisco.

Lubbock

Hike through Caprock Canyon State Park where bison sightings are common, make friends with prairie dogs, sleep in a train, warm up with art and wine, and so much more. Lubbock makes a great fall destination for all of the fun activities they have.

Best Places to Visit Texas in The Fall

One thing I love about traveling around Texas in the fall is that the crowds start to slow down. More people are going to visit family and preparing for the holidays which means more discounts on hotels and less crowds. While I love summer for all the Texas water fun, I love fall for the perfect hiking weather.
